The panic-, L ulars of the 220 yards swimming race for the championship of the world havo i .pist come by- mail trom Lnglaud. and , it will be gratifying to all good Aniori-) Aniori-) can followers of aquatic, sports to hear that C. Daniels of the N. Y..A. C. ically won this ovent. but lost the decision de-cision on a mere technicality. According to an eye-witness-oE the contest, Daniels swam a great race for the first hundred yards of the course, and at the century work ld his nearest near-est competitor by fully eight feet. After ibis he seemed to become rather distressed dis-tressed and was splashing badly toward the ond. Tn the last ten yards De Hal-may Hal-may and Radmilovic dosed rapidly on biiii, but did not beat him to the line, as the cable from abroad led us to believe. The pool at Weston-supcr-mer is 100 feet lonfr. so that for the furlong the contcsiants swam it six times and then had sixty more feet to go. This finish line was marked by a horizontal pole which the men had to touch to bo counted out. Unluckily for Daniola the pole was some distance above tho surface, sur-face, and as he came up to it ahead of the field his hand missed it. and it was not until his shoulder weut over the line that ho could touch it. Of course the judges could not count him finished until some part of his body had come in contact with the pole, and before this occurred both Ilalmay and Radmilovic, though behind Daniels, were ?blo to ioucn out and were awarded first and second. Th vounfr champion was niaved out at the finish and said he had! not felt in the best of condition for several days. |
