Law-Bieaker and Law-Defler Poses as a Representative of Utah. rilote.l by Apostolic Liar Penrose and David p. Felt, several hundred of the National Editorial association, who arrived here six hours late, went out to Saltalr Saturday afternoon, listened to the taleo poured Into their cars by zealous Mormons and took a plunge Into the lake, returned on tho 4 6' loi ; train, listened to a recital in the Tabernacle Taber-nacle and as a sort of climax to the days' enjoment, had th honor of listening lis-tening to speeches by Apostle Editor Penrose and Apostle John Henry Smith Why John Henry nobody ex: plained, but It was doubtless because of the fact that he and Penrose were typical representatives of the law-dc-llera of Utah. Marshalled for a Bath. The guests went to the lake on the 2 o'clock train. A few had lunches, but the majority ate nothing for many hours. As soon as they arrived under the pavilion Apostle Penrose and David P. Felt tried to marshal the groups of visitors together for a bathing party. One Humorous Incident. I me of the niovt humorous Incidents of the day was entirely lost upon the apostle, because if his Ignorance of whom lie was Imploring tu taku a dip. A group of the American party ladles . . re standing togethei by the Ice-water Ice-water tank when the apostle came and with watery eyes and a shifty smile advanced toward them. "Won't you ladles come and have a bath In the salt water? You w on't ha e a chance to have such a nice bath again " Gave Him Stony Stare. The American ladles gave him "the stony stare.' but he did not know It and continued to invite them to the water After a while he went away. Some people from Illinois and Ohio Standing near asked, Who Is that man ?" A man answered, "He Is Apostle Penrose Pen-rose of the Mormon hurch Has He More Than One WifeP "He hasn't more than one wife, has he?" "Well. 1 guess." And then everybody laughed. "They don't allow him to come here, do they '.'" asked one lady, much shocked. When told that he ft'SS editor edi-tor of th official paper of the Mormon i hut. h th" v. hole eruwd, including the lady, gazed In open-eyed horror upon the retreating form of Penrose. Mormons Got in Work. The editors had been told before going go-ing to Saltalr that no polygamy has lo-cn praeilsed In I'tah for many years and is now nowhere to be found. That they were skeptical Is to put It mlldl. Visitors Were Surprised. A large number of the party expressed ex-pressed themselves as much astonished that thej 'vcri. being piloted by Mormon Mor-mon editors and press-men alone They were heard to ask on all sides, "Where are the representatives of your Gentile papers? Why are they not at the head of your press association, instead of the Mormons?" At the Tabernacle. The surprise of the day to the visitors, visi-tors, but not to the residents of Salt Lake, came at the Tabernacle. The way things went might have won for the dayr the name of "Mormon day," with the National Preas association in attendance As usual the recital by Prof. John C. McClell&n was excellent, and on all hands the crowd wa9 heard to exclaim on the beauty of the Tabernacle Taber-nacle organ. The programme consisted of such numbers as brought out the power and rareness of the instrument. Penrose Inflicts a Speech. After the musical programme. Just as tho assembled audience were making mak-ing ready to rise. Editor Felt announced an-nounced that they would be f a ored by a speech by Editor Penrose Why they were to be thus faored was not stated to the people, and a number of them murmured against being kept supper-less supper-less and luncheonless to listen to a man without any position In the association. Boosts for the Church. Of course Editor Penrose made It the occasion of a boost for the church and not for the State. He said In part 'Winn you listened to the soft and beautiful tones of the organ, you en-Joyed en-Joyed It. and I want to say that those tones were tones of welcome to you. You belong to the greatest fraternity for the molding of public opinion In thf world. When you go away from here you will then tell what yon gee and hear, and not repeat the wild rumors ru-mors which come to you. Keeps Up His Lying. "We regard the star-spangled banner as the flag of our country and we are willing to uphold it under every condition. condi-tion. The stars and stripes were raised here the llrst thing when we came here to show that we are American citizens citi-zens " (A woman among the audience exclaimed In a surprised way: "I always al-ways heard It was a red bandana handkerchief they raised.") Cannot Help Themselves. "We allow the people of all faiths to come here and worship as they desire. They can glory In their worship of God or they can glory that they do not worship wor-ship God at all. We believe that every man has a right to come here and publish pub-lish freely his thoughts and sentiments Brlgham Young was not appreciated In his time, but he Is coming to be appreciated ap-preciated now by the w orld. This Tabernacle Tab-ernacle Is a monument to his greatness. Law-Deflers at Front. "You have heard rumors about us We are not all Mormons here We are Gentiles and Mormons. We lio In peat e together here. It takes two to make a quarrel, and we are not quarreling quar-reling There are some people here who are trying to make It out that the State Is in a ferment, but it is not. When you go away you can write hat you sec and hear and not what is told you. We are a God-fearing people at least most of us are. But He Does Lie. "We honor the flag of the United States When w e w ere told that we were breaking a law by the United States Circuit court, we withdrew from breaking it as peacefully and quietly as poslsble. Polygamy Is not now practised prac-tised here. Wve are not entering further fur-ther into this relation. Men who had families before are now supporting them, but that is all. I am not lying about this you know editors never lie this is a positive fact we are living In conformity with the law. Out Herods Herod. "We have no war to make. We have no fight. We are all living In peace. As God Is the Father of our spirits, so we are all brothers and sisters. It is not my purpose to sermonize today May you speak a good word for us. The Mormons are your friends. There are a few here who are disturbing spirit?, spir-it?, but we are united In Utah." Wanted to Leave Tabernacle. Again the people made ready to leave the Tabernacle for supper, but again they were frustrated. The attendant at the door was forced to call out: "You can t leaye now!" T)ur- tlm"', for seemingly seem-ingly no reason, savo as a reotesenta-tlve reotesenta-tlve of the ruling Utah family, John Henry Smith rose to speak His speoch was confined chiefly to telling the representatives rep-resentatives of the press how much the Mormons think of them and how much th.? Mormons lovo the United States flag John Henry Prates of Patriotism. "We anticipate the sentiment which you will go away and awaken. The people who usually come through Utah are not traveled people. We are among the most traveled people on tho earth. You are the same. You are conversant with all conditions from tho rontlm nts to the sea islands. You are brave and earnest. May the flag of ou.- Nation never be dishonored. It Is our land and it is our flag." Illinois Man Responds. George Ashwood, the genial editor from Texas, was asked to speak by Felt. He responded by announcing that L. B. Stringer of Illinois would d-the d-the speaking. Mr. Stringer kept on the safe ground of common patriotism. Unconsciously he caused some smiles among Salt Lake people present In the gallery by referring several times to Editor Penrose as "the representative Of the State of Utah " He was thanked by Mr. Stringer for all the pleasure which the Press association enjoyed as "the representative of the State of Utah " Apostle Penrose modestly accepted ac-cepted the thanks. Davy Felt Tired Out. After the recital, Editor Felt wiped hit? sweaty brow, Apostle Penrose and John Henry congratulated each other and they all went out to steer the visitors visi-tors Into the "Seeing Salt Lake" cars. Instead of a nice sandwich, the visitors were given, free of charge, large quantities quan-tities of free papers, "The Deseret Nevss," at the bureau of Information. |
