Show SMOOT GOES FOR ROBERTS Says Ex-Congressman Cot His Deserts. Was a Polygamist arid Law Breaker and Should Have Been Unseated. Special to The Tribune. CHICAGO, June 16. An advance guard of Utah's delegation to the Republican National convention, including Senator Reed Smoot, arrived In Chicago today, and Is to open State headquarters at the Grand Pacific Pa-cific hotel. C. FJ. Loose of Provo and W. F. Snyder of Salt Lake City arc the other two members of the advance guard. Senator Smoot Is accompanied by his wife. They are at the Grand Pacific. "I never have had the slightest fear of the outcome," said Senator Smoot today in speaking of the contest over his scat in Congress. "Even the attorney at-torney for the Ministerial association which filed the protest now admits," he continued, "that the specific charges upon which the attack was made are not founded on fact. "The contest is not on me personally. It has resolved Itself Into a movement against the Mormon church. f'iy case and that of Brlgham Rob-jerts Rob-jerts are not similar. Roberts was a polygamist and a lnw-breaker, and ought to have been unseated. I don't 1 think that a law-breaker should be a law-maker. "But I am not a polygamist nor a breaker of laws. Even the charge that I took nn oath in the Mormon church which was contrary to the oath of office of a Senator Is now admitted by my accuser to be unfounded. The people of the United States ore not going to be hoodwinked on this question. I want a decision, and I im sure of a favorable lone." MTTSmoot said Utah vrus industrially and commercially more active than usual, and that agriculture Is more productive pro-ductive this year than for some seasons, sea-sons, owing to the profuse snow fall of last winter. |
