Show BRIBERY STORY DOES NOT STOP TRIAL Mrs. Botkin, tho Alleged Trisco Borgia, Consents to Trust Her Fate to Same Jury. SAX FRANCISCO. March 31. There was another surprlw in tha Botkin murder trial today. Owing1 to the charges made yesterday pf an attempt to tamper with the jurors. St was understood un-derstood that the first proceeding this morning would be the discharge of tho jury. This, however, did not occur and the trial Is now proceeding as usual. As soon as Judge Cook took his seat before the Jury had entered the courtroom court-room Attorney Knight stated that, contrary con-trary to the advice of her counsel, Mrs. Botkin Insisted on the trial continuing, stating that she was satisfied that the jury would render, a just verdict. On being aaked by the Judge if this was her decision, Mrs. Botkin arose and said that It was, and that she demanded that there be no delay In tho case. The court then ordered that the jury be admitted, and the trial of the case was resumed. District Attorney Bylngton offered In evidence the testimony of Mrs. M. "W. BarnoK, formerly Miss Birdie Price, and Miss Lizzie Llvernash, given at the former trial of the case. Both of those witnesses are ill. The defense declared that it had no objection to make and the District Attorney At-torney began reading the former testimony tes-timony of Mrs. Barnes, who In 1SD8 was the landlady of tho Victoria hotel, where Mrs. Botkin then, lived. The testimony given by Miss Llr.zle Llvernash of Hcaldsburg, at the previous pre-vious trial, was then read. Joshua "W". Deane, husband of one of the woman who were poisoned, was recalled by the prosecution. He stated that tho Pennington family had trout for dinner on the day of the tragedy, but It did not cause any sickness. "I have decided not to admit the testimony tes-timony of Prof. Price, who analyzed some of the candy In this city," suld Judgo Cook. The prosecution then rested. The cane will proceed tomorrow morning. |
