Show HIGH HONOR FOR DR. J. F. MILLSPAUGH The Salt Lako friends of Dr. J. F. Mlllspaugh, former superintendent of schools of this city, are glad to learn of his recent elevation to the position of president of the Normal school at Lus Angeles. Cal. The Los Angeles Express of March 7th speaks of the doctor'B election to his new position as follows. Dr. J. E. Mlllspaugh, president of the Winona (Minn.) State Normal school, has been elected president of the local State Normal school, to succeed Prof Edward T. Pierce, resigned. This result re-sult was reached this morning at a meeting of tho Board of Trustees held In tho office of Trustee C. D. Wlllard, In the Bullard block, at which all the members of the board were present, with the exception of Governor Pardee. No other business was transacted After the trustees had been called to order by President Wasson of Pomona, the names of Dr. E. C. Moore. J. EL Btrlno and Prof. A. w. Rli h of Iowa, all of which had been Informally considered con-sidered by the trustees In connection with the Normal school presidency, were withdrawn, and Dr Mlllspaugh was elected by a unanimous vote to the position at a salary of $?.CuO a year. Delegates to the meeting of the Joint board of Normal school trustees ut; Instructed to present the resolutions udopted by the iocal board at hf meeting meet-ing of January 26th, and the board adjourned, ad-journed, after instructing the secretary to notify Dr Mlllspaugh of his election. Dr. Mlllspaugh. the new president, comes to Los Angeles highly recommended. recom-mended. He has been engaged In educational edu-cational work all his life, and has been successful In every position which he has filled He is said to bo. a man of marked executive ability and has tho administrative faculty well develoned. He " as in no sense of the word a candidate can-didate seeking the position, and was only induced to accept the place because be-cause the climate of Minnesota was too trying uion him. Dr Mlllspaugh Is a graduate of the University of Michigan, receiving his B, A. degree in 1879. Immediately thereafter he was elected principal of the Franktort, Ind., High school, which position he held for two years In lv3 he took up the study of medicine nn.l re Ived his M. D degree from the University Uni-versity of Pennsylvania, aNo receiv ing a special diploma for special research In the deir-ij tment of pathology. After a rest of a few months Dr. Mlllspaugh returned to educational work and from lKi to lhi0 was superintendent super-intendent Of the Salt Lake Collegiato Institute. In the latter year, when S new public school system was adopted by the Legislature of Utah, Dr Mlllspaugh Mllls-paugh was elected superintendent of public schools of Salt Lake and filled that position with signal ability until January. 1W9, when he was elected president of the Winona Normal school, which position he now holds. Twice was Dr. Mlllspaugh elected 4 tary of the Utah Board of Education; Educa-tion; he in a member of the National douncll of Education and of the board of trustees of Carlton college, and also has been president of tho Minnesota Board of Normal Presidents. Dr. Mlllspaugh Is 48 years old, and has a wife and two daughters, the latter lat-ter aged 17 and 12 years. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, It Is not known Just when Dr. Mlllspaugh Mllls-paugh will arrive In Los Angeles to enter upon hie duties, but the presumption presump-tion Is that he will come out here In a week or two, as soon as he can arrange his affairs In Winona. "We think we are fortunate In having hav-ing secured Dr. Mlllspaugh," said Secretary Sec-retary Thorpe this morning, "His credentials cre-dentials are of the highest class and he has been successful to a marked degree de-gree His election was unanimous, and we have every reason to believe that he will be as succeasfUl here as he has been elsewhere. No, thero was no other business transacted, nor were there ary changes considered. We have simply elei ted Dr. Mlllspaugh president of the Normal school, and nothing further will be done until he comes out and takes charge." |
