Last evening, In tho Golden Gato saloon, an Italian of the namo of Christmas Riley mado a-murderous a-murderous assault with an old shoemaker's shoe-maker's ltnlfo upon John Scrcn, proprietor pro-prietor of the Gato paloon. It appeara that Scrcn and Rllcy had some dlsputo over a saloon bill owed by Riley. Tho dlsputo was Bottled at tho time by Seren saying, "Well, you owe tho bill, but If you don't want to pay It, all right." Riley then left tln saloon, returning later In tho evening just as Seren had put on his coat after being relieved and was walking towards tho door. .Riley said, "Let us shako hands and be friends." "All right," said Seron. They then shook hands. Riley then asked Seren to have a drink and placed a 50 cent pleco on tho bat- and just as II. W. Mohr, who is tending bar, stepped up and askod them what they wanted, Rllcy drew tho knife and made a vicious stab at Seren, cutting him on the left cheek, laying It open to tho bone, which turned the knife. Riley then mado another attempt, at-tempt, but H. W. Mohr grabbed him by the wrist. Rlloy moved tho knife to his left hand, but was again stopped by Mohr and speedily disarmed and placed under arrest by City Marshal Crawford. Dr. Thayer was summoned and dressed dress-ed Seren's wound, putting several stitches In It. Rllcy was taken to the doctor's office to get his lip fixed up. Dr. Rhyan put some stitches in. Riley woo locked up In the city jail awaiting tho arrival of County Attorney Baker. There was great excitement among the Italians and some of them talked of lynching Riley, but cooler ideas soon prevailed. . NOTES. Mrs. J. T. Jakcman, wife of the manager man-ager of the Mercur Miner, and her sister, sis-ter, Mrs. Swancon, are visitors to Mercur Mer-cur this week. A. baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hebe Philips this week. The dance given In the L. D. S. meeting meet-ing house for the benefit of the ward was a great success financially and otherwise. Music was given by the Bacon Ba-con orchestra. ( Lewis Scherzinger of tho Scherzlnger Furniture company has gone to Bingham Bing-ham to look out a location there. He is rapidly disposing of his stock here. |
