Show DEWEY AND HIS COWBOY BAND ACQUITTED OF MURDER OF BERRYS NORTON, Kan., MarOh 19. Chaun-cey Chaun-cey Dewey and his two cowboys, Clyde ' Wilson and William J. McBride, were acquitted tonight of the charge of murdering mur-dering Burchard Berry, by a Jury which had considered the caso twenty-eight twenty-eight hours. Chauncey Dewey, a young millionaire ranchman, went to Cheyenne county, Kansas, early In 1900 to manago tho Dewey ranch. Soon after his arrival there he became be-came Involved In trouble with the Berry family, who were also prominent cat- . tlemen. Trivial misunderstandings 1 grew into Gerlous differences, which cul-I cul-I mlnatcd In the killing of Burchard Berry In June, 1903, at the homo of Alpheus Berry, during a fight in which Dewey and two of his cowboys were pitted against all of tho Berrys. Dewey and his cowboys went to tho Berry ranch to get a tank that Dewey had bought In at a Sheriff's sale. The feud had grown bitter beforo this time, and when the Deweys started to take the tank away the Berry boys rode up and a battle then took place between the two factions. Burchard, Daniel and Alpheus Berry were killed. |
