McCarthy, who was arrested by tho police a few days ago on tho charge of passing a counterfeit $5 gold plcco on Lil-Ilo Lil-Ilo Howard, was yesterday arraigned before be-fore United States Commissioner Twomoy and held for examination on the charge. His preliminary hearing was set for next Saturday at 10 a, m., and, In default of ball, he was turned over to tho Sheriff for safo keeping. Arthur Stevens Is held under un-der bonds as a witness ln the case. Tho $5 piece passed by McCarthy is of tho J samo general appearance as the "phony" coin dealt ln last fall by Jud Grant for which ho was convicted ln tho Federal court
