of Physicians Physi-cians to Be Selected From the Staffs of the Older Hospitals Why the Judge Donation Will Hot Be Used to Build an Annex to the Holy Cross Hospital I The information hitherto given to the public about the Judge Miners Home has j conveyed but a slight Intimation 01 tho real magnitude of the project and its profound significance from a religious standpoint The Tribune Is able to announce on unimpeachable authority that the Institution will be hi addition to a beautiful home for crippled and superannuated miners one of the largest and bestequipped hospitals in the Western country with a large independent staff of able physicians phy-sicians and will have the favor and patronage oC the Catholic church of Utah For many years the Holy Cross hospital hos-pital has been recognized as the lend iug Catholic institution of Its kind between be-tween Denver and San Franqlsco The church authorities exhibited the kecn est interest in its wellbeing and no cOmmunIcant of the church thought of going elsewhere when In need of skilled nursing So great has been its I popularity that during the past year f its rooms and wards have been constantly con-stantly filled and at times it has been I necessary to refuse admission to applicants ap-plicants This condition of affairs has given the sisters much concern and i from time to time the necessity for I additional means with which to enlarge en-large the building and the scope of their humane work has been impressed upon the public both through the newspapers news-papers and by personal solicitation When the announcement of Mrs Judges splendid charity was made it was assumed by 1 some of the leading Catholics that the Judge Home would be erected as an annex to the Holy Cross hospital The latter Is situated in the center of large grounds Is in one of the pleasantest and most healthful I health-ful parts of the city and it was pointed point-ed out that the combination of the two retreats would enable each to be conducted more economically and create one grand imposing and 1 beneficent Institution instead of two I minor ones There was no doubt as to i the willingness of the Sisters of the Holy Cross to accept such a proposition proposi-tion but the offer has not and In all probability never will be made BISHOP SCANLAN GIVES REASONS 1 I REA-SONS On the contrary the determination of Mrs Judge and her spiritual adviser ad-viser Bishop Scanlan to make the Judge memorial a hospital as well usa us-a home practically displaces the Holy Cross as an auxiliary of the church TVo reasons were given yesterday by Bishop Scanlan why the new homo was not to be made an addition to the old hospital First Because It is the wish of Mrs Judge that the home should preserve pre-serve its Identity as a monument to the memory of her husband and second sec-ond because she wishes me to have general charge of Its management Could you not exercise such con trol If it were In connection with the I Holy Cross was asked The Holy Cross replied the bishop bish-op la owned by a corporation re ligious corporation in Indiana It is not properly a diocesan Institution and hence does not come within my juris diction as bishop Will there Ije an Independent medical medi-cal staff tor the Judge Home Very likely While it will be primarily pri-marily a home for disabled and aged miners the facilities will enable us to care for the Injured and amjctod of the community as well as the victims of accidents in the mines Have you given any thought as to the jTClIgious order from which the nurses will be selected 1 have not was the bishops answer an-swer That whit a great many other details will not be decided upon for some time At present I can give you no Information as Mrs Judge is in California and I will make no definite plans until I can discuss them with herHOLY HOLY CROSS WILL BE SECOND Inasmuch as the bishop of the dio characterizes the Holy Cross as anxindependent religious corporation I jyld authorizes the statement that he vlll have supervision of the Judge hospItal it is selfevident that the lat I ter will enjoy the approbation and sup port of the Catholic church as a re ligious body The Holy Cross hospital 1 wllll still have a connection with the I clyirch through the sisterhood but Its I Pitted will be second to that of the JKhje Home I There will doubtless be much specu lation among the local Catholics as to the order from which the nurses of the now hospital will be selected and no I l guessing among the medical fro I ternity as to the personnel of the staff As to the llrat It Is I intimated that the Sisters of Charity the Sisters of Mercy or the French Order of the Lit tie Sisters of the Poor will be favored and III connection with the second there Is a surmise that selections will be made from the staffs oC both the present hospitals as well as from I among the outside physicians Concerning the causes which have led Bishop Scanlan to favor a new hospital little can be said because lit tIc Is known and the matter Is i too dellcato for rash speculation It Is safe to Infer however that the Independence Inde-pendence of the Holy Cross has been emphasized at various times causing the bltmop to feel that Its management does not wish to be Identified with and I subordinate to tho local church au thorities Until three years ago there was tho utmost harmony but since I that time the bishop has mado but one or two visits to the Institution An other fact that has provoked some comment is that the Catholic physicians physi-cians havo all withdrawn from the staff which now consists entirely of Protestants and Mormons |
