Show THE REPORT OF THE miNT The report of Director of the Mint J Roberts shows that tho gold coinage of the United States for the fiscal year ending June 30 1001 was about 40 percent per-cent of the gold coinage of the world the figures being 99065713 for tho United States and but 155897780 for all other countries a total for world of gold coined of 254903495 I 1 Of the total gold production of North America amounting to 116051 500 of which 79171000 Was produced I in this country practically all of the I metal came to the United States and our Imports of gold exceedcd our exports ex-ports by 12806010 showing a gain of gold for the year amounting to 128 917010 The coinage of silver dollars was 24298850 entirely from the old stock of silver purchased under the Sherman act of 1S90 of which the stock was 83 288054 standard ounces at the beginning of the year The fractional silver coinage was to the value of 10966648 Minor coinage was to the value of 2009568 The total coinage was 176999132 pieces of the value of 136340781 The mints in operation during the year were those at Philadelphia New Orleans and San Francisco The mint I at Philadelphia Is In a new magnificent building the pride of the country and with the best modern machinery and appliances with It enlarged to its present pres-ent dimensions and the addition of the I mint at Denver which gets on slowly the country will have ample minting facilities for decades to come By tho time that another mint is needed no doubt Salt Lake City will be In such commanding position by reason rea-son of the metallic output in the surrounding sur-rounding region as to make this its I regon site In the meanwhile we should have I a United States assay office The lack of one causes great delays and Inconvenience Incon-venience Boise has one which Is right and proper Helena has one also right and proper and the samo at Carson and Denver Salt Lake City Is alone of the great mining centers to experience experi-ence this neglect of the Government a neglect which surely cannot be suffered suf-fered much longer for It Is shameful that a mining community producing twentyfive million dollars a year In the metals should receive the cold shoulder to such an extent that even a Government Govern-ment assay office Is refused to It We commend active consideration of this I lack to those who arc In position to see I that the evil Is cured |
