Show CREMATRY SHE VETO I Mayor Thompson Does Not Favor New Location I SAYS PRICE IS TOO HIGH Sanitary Committees Ordinance Will Go to the Council Tonight Without Mayors Approval Reason Given Is That the City Already Owns a Suitable Site and the Purchase of a New One Would Be Extravagance Six Hundred Citizens Sign the Petition of Protest I There will 6e no crematory at Fifth I South and Fifth West streets unless the City Council decides to override Mayor Thompsons opposition to the measure providing for the purchase of this site The ordinance will be sent to the Council tonight with the Mayors veto attached and a lively fight maybe may-be looked for The Mayor Is of the I opinion that the price asked for the t site Is excessive and that there Is no necessity of purchasing an expensive I piece of ground when the city already owns an available site The text of his I veto message Is as follows I I I herewith return resolution 134 providing pro-viding that Salt Lake City purchase for the sum of 3760 certain land at Fifth South and Fifth West streets to be used for the purpose of erecting thereon there-on the city crematory without my approval ap-proval for the following reasons In my judgment the consideration of 3750 proposed to be paid by the city fpr said land Is so much In excess of the real value of the land that it should not be purchased by the city Furthermore Further-more the city owns available as well as suitable land for a crematory site and I deem i therefore unnecessary for tho city to purchase the land as contemplated by the resolution I would respectfully recommend that your honorable body take the necessary neces-sary steps to erect a new crematory as soon as possible on the site where tho former one was located In addition to the reasons set forth above the Mayor was Influenced to some extent by the protests which poured Into his office from people living in the vicinity of the proposed site No less than four or five petitions were received I re-ceived bearing the signatures of over 600 persons who made formal and strenuous objection to the measure This is the burden of their complaint The proposed site is In the immediate immedi-ate vicinity three large public schoolhouses school-houses It I t is a waste of money for the municipality to buy the land when It already owns suitable tracts and the price named for tho Fifth South and Fifth West site is exorbitant for land in that section of the city The land In question is held In the name of Dr J C E King and Mrs Ella Griffiths According to the statement of Dr King it was sold last March to James Anderson and a deed given The deed however has never been recorded While the majority of the Councilmen favor the ordinance It Is I doubtful If them the-m sur vlll find support necessary to pass It I over the Mayors head When It I first passed the Council it received ten votes and it will require that num ber tonight to make it effective I is probable however that some of the ten members have changed their opinion since they learned of the popular clamor against the proposed crematory site and the firm opposition of the Chief Executive I is believed there fore that the six votes necessary to sustain the veto will be forthcoming and the new crematory will be built on the old sle |
