Show 1MAY VETO ROAD BILL GovernorMs Expected to Reduce Re-duce Appropriations TOTAL IS BEYOND REVENUE Gov Wells Confers With Members of State Board of Equalization 3la tlve to Probable Bsceipts During the Coming Two Years Question of Reduction Appsnrs to Bo a Choice Between Bonds and Bridges and Educational Institutions Measure Approved Gov Wells is very carefully considering con-sidering the bills which were left In his hands when the Legislature nd Jotirncd lie lias until Tuesday of next week to act upon them and as there important measures arc a number of very tires to bo considered ho will devote as much time lo the task us possible The general appropriation bill Is one that demands serious consideration Inclusive of the highway and bridge bill and the bounty measure the appropriations ap-propriations aggregate about 1300000 The State Board of Equalization which met with the Governor yesterday informed in-formed him that the assessed valuation of the State this year would be about 110000000 nnd a 5milI tax will raise 550000 per year which would be less than the amount required although in the neighborhood ot 50000 per year can be counted upon from other sources The 110000000 assessment this year will be an increase ot 4000 000 over last year and If the Board cf Equalization concludes that It can increase In-crease the assessment next year the entire appropriation might stand This ia unlikely however and there is promise of a big cut somewhere 1C a cut Is made the highway and bridge bill will fare badly Gov Wells said last night that as the matter now stands It was a choice between the educational institutions and the roads and bridges In any event it Is piob able that the highway and bridge bill will ibe materially reduced by cutting out all of the rich counties and the entire en-tire bill 19 in danger The Governor has not yet acted upon the bill allowing the Board of Education Educa-tion to increase its levy this year and will not do so for some days yet He has been urged by some of the most prominent residents of the city to veto the measure while others have just as strongly urged him to approve It upon the ground that the schools would compelled to close unless the relief was afforded Should the County Commissioners to missioners express a willingness levy a lmll county school tax there doubt that the Governor Is practically no bill ernor would Immediately veto the but It la understood that the county school levy will only be 2 mills and the bill will probably be approved The Governor seems well pleased with the bills establishing a City court and will approve them It Is i believed by those who havo examined the measure meas-ure that they will remedy abuses that have been complained of In the city for years The bill qltorlng a bounty on pr > datory animals la another measure which will receive the approval of the Governor Sheepmenlsay that their an 1 nual losses from these animals average aver-age 100 sheep out of every bunch of i 5500 and it Is also claimed that the i warfare being waged against the posts I In adjoining1 Slates is driving the animals Into Utah It Is quite probable that the lock big of a horses tall wIll be a misdemeanor mis-demeanor In Utah when the Governor passes upon the measure to that effect ef-fect now upon his dusk an he has discussed the matter with horsemen who say that the operation ja not only very painful but that it takes away a needed protection against flies |
