Show CoMfYlENDING VELLS I The veto of the GOernor of Utah Is cor rect but his words Indicate little of anti polygamy sentiment tDetroit Journal 4 r 1 Gov Wells of Utah was rightly advised In vetoing the Evans bill which was de signed to regulate prosecutions for polygamy soas practically to nullify them This Mormon Governor knew lhat such a bill would be bad strategy Just now and would probably center all the Indignation of tho American people against Mormonlsm on his devoted head He was perfectly right In saying that It I would do moro harm than good to the people of Utah and would revive the demand on Congress for a constitutional I amendment against polygamy But It Is nonb the less Instructive as proof of the persistence thoroughness nnd patience of the Mormons In spreading their practices I All talk of reform against the plural marriage custom Is now dropped and one of tljo results of the Roberts episode in Congress was to emphasize that fact lt Is worth while directing public attention to Utah again because of tho comforiabjo feeling In some quarters that the Mormon belief on Us worst olde is being counter acted by a movement from within trio sect There Is little proof of that as this veto of Gov Wells shows HJs Justifica tion of It Is full of sanctimonious appeal l In defense of the divine origin of tho whole polygamous Institution New York Commercial Advertiser j I |
