Show NOTHING FROM YANKS ONE EXCONFEDERATE RAISES ROW AT REUNION Louisville Gathering Squelches tho One Unreconstructed Southerner at the Dig Meeting in Louisville I 1 Louisville Ky June iThe tenth annual reunion of the United Confederate Confed-erate Veterans adjourned sine die at Jl oclock tonight The meeting of 1901 will be held In Memphis Tho annual parade of the veterans was abandoned on account of the inclement weather The morning session ended in a stato of great excitement and confusion The trouble arose at the conclusion of the presentation of thc report ot the com mlttco L on resolu J lions resOlutlbn had been Incorporated in the report to the effect that the convention of Confederates I Con-federates recognised with appreciation the language of Gen Daniel E Sickles the orator at the annual reunion of the Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg Fredericks-burg In which Gen Sickles had mentioned men-tioned most kindly the men of the Confederacy Con-federacy and the resolution said the Confederates reciprocated thu feeling shown toward them by the men of the Army of the Potomac Gen Gordon put the question the adoption of the report There was a chorus of Ayes and when he called for the vote In the negative he said The ayes have it Alter he had announced an-nounced the vote there came a few cries of No Gen Gordon said o1 did not think that there would bo any negative votes on such a qucstlon but as there were some after I had declared the vote i will not resubmit it The author of the resolution W H I Burgynn made a strong plea for Its adoption He said that ho had been present at thc meeting at Fredericksburg Fredericks-burg and had heard the kindly sentiments senti-ments expressed by the soldiers of tho North and ho desired the passage of the resolution merely as a matter of courtesy Col J H Shepherd of Richmond Va secured the floor and said I want coquoltlng with the Yankees who defeated us For Gods sake dont accept anything from their hands I Dont accept anything from Union soldiers sol-diers Vote It down comrades vote It down Instantly there was a terrific uproar Dozens of delegates were on their feet demanding recognition from the chair Gen Gordon finally restored order and In response tou call for his opinion said I trust the time will never come whllo I stand on Southern ground or among the chivalrous men of tho South when I will refuse to send a kindly 1 message to an enemy Then coming down to the front rail of tho platform the General raised his voice In emphatic earnestness saying I know the sender of this message On the heights of Gettysburg he stood gallantly in front of my line and it was my bullets that sent him to thin rear with a leg off For me I am going go-ing to reciprocate the kindly message of the Northern soldiers Wild cheers greeted the declaration Gen Gordon yielded the tsnvcl to Gon Cabell of rexas who made a short ad dress in favor of the resolution Ho put the question in the midst of such great confusion that his voice could scarcely bo hiuird It was adopted with a roar of assent |
