the Grand Central a group lying between the Centennial Eureka and Mammoth With shaft started near the summit of the hill betveen the two named groups it required lots of digging get down deep enough and then drift for oie but the men engaged did not hesitate hut pushed ahead three years In which time they put in about a quarter of u I million dollars before getting any returns re-turns In June 1808 they reached the point of having a surplus from which to begin paying dividends of fol250 each and by the end of the year they divided up among stockholders thosbm of 218 750 In 1690 they paid Company This company did a splendid thing for 1 tho town of Silver City and the neighboring neigh-boring mines when they one year ago put in a water system to supply tin people from Dennis Springs eight miles away This was done at a cost of 23 000 up to the Silver City tank from which point the Star Consolidated and Grand Central extended pipes to their properties The supply has fo far proven prov-en ample for all users and Its quantity t is being extended by taking In and opening other springs It has proven a I great boon to the thriving town of Silver Sil-ver as well as to the half dozen or more < mines which it supplies The company spent quite a sum In extensions during the year The New East Tintic Railroad This road of about two and a half miles In length with arIse of GOO fee I was an eventful one for the Centennial Eureka Dividends were resumed December 1893 and were paid each month up to and Including July The ore body which had been lost be twecn the 300 and 100 was found In December De-cember 1SOS and by the first of the year was opened up sufllclently to show that the property was again In iIi iI-i During the year this ore body has been opened from seventy feet above the 400 to the 700 level and Is found to be pay ore between those limits In July the Boston parties who were the prime movers In the purchase oC the groups now worked as the UnIted Slates mining going on steadily in all parts of the mine Contracts have been made for a new I Stirling boiler of 100horsepowei capacity for a tramway to transmit the < ores from the mine to the railway and to contract has been made II by the Centennial Eureka Mining company com-pany with the American Smelting and Refining company under the terms of which the formor furnishes the latter I 100000 tons of ore within the next three years During 1S99 there have been produced pro-duced from the mines of this company 5S250 pounds of lead GCO547 pounds of copper 23SOS1 ounces of silver and 13 702209 20U1000 ounces of gold This property paid Its old owners 1J2 I dividends of 50 cents each a total oi 2100000 the exact amount which was received by them for the properly from its present owners Doublless the new owners of this bonanza will obtain from it more than it has paid Its original origi-nal owners both by dividends and bIts b-its sale The Mammoth There was a change in the spring In the control of the stock of this company com-pany by which Samuel McIntyre became be-came manager Shortly afterward beginning be-ginning In June the payment of dividends divi-dends was resumed and 2UOOOO was distributed among the shareholders since that date The mine still remains at a depth of 1800 feet and the usual amount of drifting and work of exploiting exploit-Ing was done In which new bodies of fluxing ore Several shipments were made outside of the State for the samo purpose The property has been bonded to Thomas Weir and the latter part of May he began grading a road and get ting ready to sink a shaft This shaft was sunk for tho first 100 feet by a whim and after that with steam hoist This shaft has now advanced over tOO feet Tho shaft is is a firstclass one being timbered with square sets and lagged throughout It Is four feet by eleven feet In tho clear It has two hoisting compartments each lx1 1 feet I and a ladderway 1 The machinery plant consists of a 10x10 hoistingen gine which Is used for sinking and a I 10x11 hoistingengine recently set for operating the cage which is used for development purposes Levels have Just been started at 300 400 and fiOO feet This shaft is 1 also equipped with two boilers one 80 and one 10 horse power and a small blowingengine to operate the blower The plant Is complete com-plete in every respect and very gpod progress has been made since this shaft was started The Iron ore marketed Is taken from open quarries which have reached over 300 feet In depth and has an area of over ICO feet and 200 feet long The shaft was started some distance from this open quarry and crosscuts will run from the shaft and cut under the old works This mine has been yielding probably an average of 10000 tons of I fluxing material for for the past score of years or more With depth it in hoped to find copper within the group Star Consolidated There was much development on this group during the year in which an average of twentytwo men besides a small force on contract Work was employed em-ployed all the time The shaft was extended ex-tended about 150 feet and has reached jv depth ol 100 feet and four levels were run from It 7n ftrtftlti vim property in good shape for J active mining in the future Some leasers mined In the old workings and made shipments of ore There wadded w-added another boiler and blacksmith shop and two houses one for the foreman fore-man At a recent meeting the stockholders stock-holders made a voluntary assessment of 10 cents per share on their stock and this enables the company to pay off the Investment In ground and place tho company In excellent shape A good water wa-ter supply was obtained from the Mammoth Mam-moth company by pulling in 6000 feet of twoandahalfinch pipe to make connections and this
