Show i HYD ROCARBO NS There la 1 not much to say at present j relative to the hydrocarbons of which this State so richly abounds But very little anphaltum or gllsonltc was I shipped during the year much less Hum during any of the fie or sIx yearn previous One cause of Ihlo wag tho I agitation and entanglements between I parties Interested and the general Government Gov-ernment over the lands In which these deposits are found These deposits are cither on or In the vlclnliy of the lila aim and Uncompahgrc reservations In I tho eastern portion of Utah Theao deposits de-posits of attphullum there are a perfect wonder to science There arc known to I exist over one dozen different varieties Tho finest uHphultum known occurs In the northcsislurn part of the State I is 1 known as gllaonlte being so named In honor of Limo first discoverer Sam Gil son This ikpOHll In found In true fis I Hiiro veins from two to six 1 feet wide I The veins all run In one direction north about 58 degrees DO minutes W stand st-and cut the formation In almost a dl rntt line There are known to exlHt I siveil distinct veins occupying a district dis-trict forty miles square The greater part In fact all but three veins are I within the boundary of what was the I lTncompahgro Indian reservation The I chief use for gllsonlte has been In the I mainifuelurc at varnish and japans i Fur this purpose alone the demand hal boon from GOOO to 5000 tons annually Gllsonlto has taken the place of the Egyptian nHpJwltum for enameling and Japunnlng and Is much sought after In Europe jot this purpose alone AH black enameling la now made of I gllsonltc The analysis of gllsonlto Is f Carbon 78ro Hydrogen 1100 I Oxygen SOO Nitrogen 10 I Ash 0 There arc various deposits of aspiinl lums in the State which are very different dif-ferent from gllsonltc which Is a remarkably re-markably pure and dry article Near Clear I I creek there IH an asphultum mixed with limestone In good Im goo proper llons for paving of streets and for this purpose It Is I said Its equal has not been found hence It Is fast growing In favor I This deposit Is an Immense one and from It large shipments have been made for paving purposes In some of the Eastern cities I occurs In inexhaustible In-exhaustible blanket deposits and has an average analysis of about Carbonate of lime 10 Carbonate of magnesia 20 Silica f Bitumen 20 Z Total 10 Near Thistle In Utah county there Is n largo deposit of bituminous sand which when properly applied makes very line pavements for streets At present very little Is being done with it For sidewalks I because of being a non conduclor It does not become covered with Ice and that feature Is certainly avery a-very desirable ono Ookerlto occurs In pockot deposlls near Soldier Sum mil uhcro there has been considerable development wore done such as sinking sink-ing shafts etc A few carloads wero shipped to New York some years ago but for several years there has been but little done toward mining and lte mining manufacturing u man-ufacturing thIs material which Is a kind of natural parafflne mixed with something like powdered Jet This material ma-terIal commands n good price and Is In demand In the market but the quantl ly has not yet been found to make its J 1 mining a permanent Industry Jcrrnnent Elaterltc is another rare substance 1 found In Utah In an area of a few I miles square within the Ulntah reservation I reser-vation This IB a pure osphaltum that has becn vulcanized unfit It resembles hard rubber So far nothing Is I known as to Its value There Is considerable speculation ns to what position it will take In the market There hus recently been much atlen ton paid to these deposits and It Is hoped that not long hence there will grow from It a good Industry In Whilmore canyon In Carbon county Is n large deposit of bituminous bitumi-nous sand which is so rich that the bItumen seeps out and deposits at the base of the ledge an almost pure mat Iha or mountain tar This ought to become of commercial value In supplying sup-plying asphaltum In a tarry condition Olhor I deposits of similar character are found but not In quantity to Induce any decided development I Along Green river there are many signs of petroleum and some efforts havo been made to tap It by sinking wells but none of these have gone to any great depth That stream for two hundred or more miles has out through mountains of shales carrying large percentages per-centages of oil These shales where oxperlmenled on by dlslllllng produce largo quanllllcs of gas or oils suitable suita-ble for Illuminating purposes |
