Show TH STATE OF NEVADA Past years of vivid experience have demonstrated Nevada to he a land of varied and unlimited possibilities Be ing one of the largest States in the American Union her 71000000 acres of territory certainly furnish abundant room for tho evolution and development develop-ment of natural advantages great mining mi-ning wealth and agricultural resources Traversed by mountain ranges seamed with mineral veins of al kinds and I broad valleys plains and grazing lands I with a climate unsurpassed her inherent in-herent advantages have never been fully comprehended Even her rivers are peculiarly hen own converging from all sides toward the broad central and disappearing or developing Into expanslvev lakes within her own border none of the water getting get-ting away except through evaporation Into the dry sunny atmosphere And this very peculiarity through past ages Induced the formation of extensive deposits de-posits of borax coda salt and other minerals In the range of those sinks marshes old alkaline flats and plains Nevadas past wealth history ha been more in her rich silver and gold I mines than In agriculture and her mines and minerals still hold prominence promi-nence OH resources of present and future I fu-ture prosperity Yet during the last few years with the exhaustion and decline of tho famous Comstock and other rich Oliver nnd gold mines elsewhere In the State agricultural pursuits have Advanced Val V-al ed Into substantially Increiislrlp 151 Importance S I > G I S THE COMSTOCK LODE J Th pn st history of this Brent and v mlrrrni channel hnrin a bul lion production of 600000000 In silver and gold added to the financial wealth ol the world Is merely to be mentioned as u matter of comparison with Its present unproductiveness and future I possibilities f Below the Sutro tunnel level where It Intersects the lodclGJO below the surface no dividendpaying bodies of ore or bonanzas were found That In the Union Consolidated Consoldted mine was quite extensive and valuable paying expenses but no dividends and few or none others were found as good as that elsewhere below the tunnel The formation for-mation seemed more diversified mixed and less Inclined to bonanza concentration concen-tration than In the upper workings of working ot the lode consequently at the depth of 3300 feet all further attempts at deeper mining were susperiaed < This lowest working dej > th In the Comstock was attained by the Joint Ophlr and Mexican Mexi-can deep wlnxe sunk 600 feet below the level of the bottom the Union shaft which was 2700 feet in vertical depth I I The Combination shaft of the Chollar UnicornSavage mining companies was 32CO feet in depth the deepest vertical I shaft In America at that time A very cistljr and efficient hydraulic pump operated by ample water poeI conducted I con-ducted from the maui range of the Sierra Nevada distance of twenty I three miles hold the mine drainage I down to that depth but no paying ore bodies being found there at any point t stockholders got discouraged and tired of paying assessments and in the middle mid-dle of October 1SSC Comstock deepest mining had to b totally suspended Since that time several millions in gold and silver have been taken from deposits of medium or lowgrade ore left or passed by in tho upper levels but when those also were exhausted or I became nonpaying gold and silver production pro-duction gradually ceased Meanwhile I during the passing years the water submerged the mining depths slowly rising by degrees nearly to the Sutro tunnel level About IL year ago a combination of the principal mining companies comprising com-prising the northern bonanza section of tho lode contracted with the Risdon Iron Works company San Francisco to reduce or pump the wntcr down 500 feet In order to get at and utilize sundry sun-dry deposits or leavings of ore supposedly sup-posedly known to exist In those submerged sub-merged levels A powerful hydraulic pump of latest design was furnished the operating power being supplied by the Virginia and Gold Hill Water company 1 com-pany as before I was placed at lie 1750 station level of the C C shaft of the Con Virginia company thirteen I feet above the water and twentysix I feet below the level of the Sutro tunnel tun-nel Intersection through which the water was bent out on Us way to Carson Car-son river The pump commenced last February and has done excellent and effective Work when In action but sonslderably Intermittent by reason of occasional brealcage or unexpected dllilculUcs encountered en-countered the water being now reduced to ibni t COO fee b ow the Iptlal pf int the 17CO level The supply of water operating the pump was found t be Inadequate and the Risdon company also found that more pumps were required re-quired In order to lower the water 600 I feetIn accordance with their contract Measures have been taken and a contract I con-tract made for bringing In n full supply sup-ply of electric power for all Comstock mining purposes from Florlston on tho Truckee river twentythree miles above Reno Tho conducting copper wire from Flonston to Virginia City will be about twentyeight miles long the poles being placed nearly In a direct line between the two points Electric power is to do the pumping and take I the place of steam at the various mining mi-ning works along the lode and with additional ad-ditional l pumps placed at other eligible polntH the water will be more effectively effec-tively lowered and active mining and ore production resumed curly In the coming season S During the last few weeks the extraction ex-traction of ore on the 1800 level of the Consolidated Virginia mine has been resumed which Is being reduced at the Morgan mill on Carson river at the rate of spvonlyfivo tons per day which Mil be the only regular bullion product oillclally given In quarterly reports by mining superintendents to the County Abfiossor pant year as provided by law during tEe Several small lots of good ore encountered en-countered in the workings and explorations explora-tions of the various mines are said to I be accumulated In their respective dumps which will be duly utilized In proper time I The assays and workings of Comstock Com-stock ores during the last few years i snow an average ofCO per cent gold to 10 per cent silver In the old State to make J regular quarterly sworn reports to tholr respective County Assessors they rut give the amount of ore extracted gross bullion yield or value and the net proceeds pro-ceeds over and above till costs of mining mi-ning milling transportation and other expenses I Is upon these net proceeds pro-ceeds that the bullion tax for State and county purposes Is levied therefore quite naturally the expense account Is judiciously reckoned up to the full limit In many cases the gross yield is thus necessarily swallowed up In the expenses leaving no margin for taxation taxa-tion The last reportsfor the quarter ending December 31stare not ted as I yet therefore the four preceding ones I give the best obtainable I official information infor-mation as to the annual yield of gold and silver also the revenue derived from tiucatlon Lincoln county takes the lead In bullion bul-lion production with her famous De LaMar La-Mar gold mine which reports t gross quarterly yield of over 300000 also the April Fool over 30000 and lesser amounts from thc Lyndon Peaslee Searchlight and other producing mines producing I The Ophlr mine at Stateline Is also repot re-pot ted to have opened a large body of rich ore samples of which show a yield as high as 1000 per ton principally c I silver princpal I Eureka follows suit with her old es j tabllshed Eureka Con Richmond Jackson Tenabo Altoona Diamond I Excelsior and other mines which have yielded millions In the past and are still doing well I White Pine too comes to the front with her HomeStake Joanna China I man Star and other prosperous mines I and promising ones in course of development devel-opment Fifteen thousand dollars Is I stated to be the yield of the Osceola placer gold mines with sure prospects of continuance Elko In turn comes in with over 160 t 000 as her annual quota producing principally prin-cipally from her noted Dexter and Eira I mines Other mines are favorably reported re-ported for future prominence Ormsby Is not far behind with her showing of over 131000 principally from tailings worked by the Eureka Cyanide company down on the Carson river A similar plant Is talked of further fur-ther up the river next season and the Morgan mill which started up Decem ber 1 t crushing Comstock ore will show good returns in the closing quarterly quar-terly report of the year Lyon shows nearly 35000 principally I from tailings workings In Gold canyon I can-yon and rear Dayton her chief bullion resource the Oest mine near Silver City being shut down or nonproduc Ing most of the year The best gold mines both quartz and placer In Lyon county are in and about Silver City in Gold canyon just above Dayton being r the first gold diggings found by pioneer I Immigrants coming across the plains to California They arc still worked and paying but the chief peculiarity is the number of small and very rich veins many not more than an Inch or I so in f thickness one or two new mines Several small fortunes have been made out of them during the last 1 year and there are a few more left I There are also large veins of lowgrade I silver and gold ore waiting for future reference in better times Silver City holds her own better than most other I t mining camps Esmoralda reports over 25000 principally prin-cipally from the noted Pemlico mine near Hawthorne less than one ton from I
