Show QUARRIES i T J z The HlHlemont bad often been mado that Utah had enough building Steno to supply the entire West for ngcs to come This while It may scorn In credible to some is I really true Ono roads of the usuries of Little Cottonwood Cot-tonwood canyon from which the granite gran-ite wan hrol < > n to build the Salt Lake Temple but he finds no quarries in tho actual SCTIXO there It was simply a question of splitting great granite boulders deposited mainly In the bed J of the canyon Into sizes suitable for himllln and carrying them to their destination It wan not a question ot stone so much as a matter of transportation transpor-tation Hundreds of thousands of cords oC granite have come from Little Cottonwood Cotton-wood canyon and used In various ways during the last fifty years and yet the vunrlal man hoa scarcely made a Bcar on the face of nature Ioday It la almost al-most as If he had not been there It has been a matter of wonder that more granite was not used In Salt Lake iMlllln This bo cvci Is largely accounted for by the fact thntlll Is very expensive I coating properly dressed 1 probably three times as much as brown simclHtono which hi so generally nd mired and sought after In Little Cot lonwood alone there Is enough granite I to build several cities of the size oC I London or New York The deposits I are simply Inexhaustible vo far as known Until lately however tho t > Mormon church has used this stone almost exclusively Experiments are I ro being made with it howtver in rome I I r-ome of the modern buildings being I erected and arrangements are being I perfected lookinG to the marketing of Y Ithe granite on a larger and consequently 1 consequent-ly l a cheaper scale The shipments of 7of granite therefore have been comparatively compara-tively light this year but Jake Smith the veteran quarrymnn of Little Cottonwood Cot-tonwood canyon says this year will see T I hundreds of cords moved j I Homexvliore in tho neighborhood of Ir I 300 carloads of soft greyslone have I been sent out of the kyuno quarries J I I about half of which has gone beyond F I the confines of the State and has at traded so much attention as to guarantee fJ guar-antee n big demand the coming spring I and miinmei < l II Thirtythree oars of Sanpete oolite I the quarries of which are nrar Eph i I maim have found a market some of It fF I being used In the residence I of David i I Keith now In process of construction I Next in demand FO far as builders 1 I I I have been concerned during the year 1 Just passed is the Mt Nebo brownstone I brown-stone of which thirty cars have been marketed for structural purposes br I I sides large quantities of smaller stuff f From the sandstone quarries of Red Z I IButte and Emigration canyons both i I near the city there have been taken 1 I during the year says V II Culmr r I t who I gncrallv conslJorcd in authority i t I authori-ty on the subject not less than 2500 carloads all of which has been lakn i out by wagon I I The quarries near Park City havo supplied at least 12o J carloads and those near Ilober City have turned out from thirty to forty carloads of nagging which Is I generally admit ted to be < M I good as can be found anywhere and far superior to cement or asphaltum for sidewalk purposes An excellent article of buff sandstone I also comes from Emigration canyo the residences of Thomas Weir and O t J Salisbury are monuments built from t It I The disposition to use marble in the 1 construction of residences is shown in the case of Thomas Kearns who baa opened up a quarry In the southern part of the State and will probably use much of this stone In various parts of the Stale there are deposits of marble by the acre and It comes In all shades from black to white At tho I head of Snake creek In I Summit county one company alono owns 3fiO acres of marble lands whleU have been held for years the owners simply awaiting a demand Outside of hclng thoroughly prospected the fields have not yet been touched The hesi tancy on the part of the owners of I marble to branch out Is due to the de finaL attitude of the big marble trust I which has made It Impossible to ship I marble East and tho knowledge that I such demand as might arise must come I from local sources only Utah pro duces every grade of marble known And so It goes almost throughout time State There In no lack of good build tag material anywhere and it runs all the way from common cobbles to the finest grades of marble and of onyx A crying need however so conlra tom say Is a mammoth stonesawing plant While there are several here now there Is room for another big one constructed on modern principles and run In a businesslike manner Th present plants are crowded far beyond their capacity Contractors say ther i Is an excellent opening for a mammoth stone sawmill costing say 5100000 and that Interest on the money and a good profit besides Is doubly assured The quarries being scattered as they are it Is almost impossible to get exact ex-act data but those In a position to know pay that 25 pep cent more Utah stone was used In this city In 1S90 than In the year previous and 50 per cent went outside of the Stale The building stone industry of Utah can be made one of the most Important In the West The possibilities are almost al-most unlimited |
