Show I THE HERCULES COMPANY Its Extensive Operations in Logan Canyon Cache County The largest project ever launched In Cache valley and an electrical enterprise enter-prise of the first magnitude Is the one now being completed by the Hercules Power company of Logan It Involves In-volves an outlay of nearly a half million mil-lion dollars and < the possibilities it opens for the valley are beyond the conception of the unimaginative Formed in 1S99 the Hercules company built and has since operated a plantS I I plant-S developing something like 500 horsepower I horse-power all of which has been used in Logan City Now however this power pow-er will be increased many times and the advantages resulting to Cache county will be multiplied in proportion propor-tion tionDuring During the past year the Hercules company absorbed the Logar Light and Heating company the only other electrical concern there and the two are now operated under one head with Lafayette T Holbrook as president Eldon P Bacon vicepresident and general gen-eral manager W C Cates secretary and treasurer These gentlemen together to-gether with George W and Moses Thatcher form the board of directors The construction of the new plant was begun last May and the work of damming the river constructing the flume powerhouse etc has progressed steadily ever since Logan river is tapped at a point about four miles from that city and tho water is conducted from there a distance dis-tance of two miles to the mouth of Logan canyon where the new station is I being built lhe dam is 15 feet high 30 feet wide and 130 feet long At one I end of the dam Is an intake 23 feet In width tapering in its length of 100 feet to G feet the width of the Inside of tho flume This flume is GxP6 feet Inside and has a fall of two feet to the thousand and Itls estimated will carry the en tiro volume of Logan river during normal I nor-mal waler flow It is constructed of one and onehalf Inch native Ied pine fastened upon 6x6 ills of the same ma teriaj I About 7r > 0000 ftot of native material I ma-terial was used in building it In addition I addi-tion to great quantities of redwood It runs along the north side of the canyon at a considciublc elevation from the road and in building it some erA er-A A A AhAAAkA A A nicePproblems were worked out One in particular was the construction of the big trestle around the huge cure known as the DevilsGate ItIs over COO feet In length and from 50 f to 150 feet high according to the contour of the cliff and as the turn is very abrupt It was something of an engineering engi-neering feat to prevent the outward pressure of the water from wrecking the structure The accompanying 11 I lujratlon shows the trestle ready for the flume to be placed upon At THE FLUME The water is discharged from the flume at an elevation of 230 feet above the station into two independent still pipes four feet in diameter and nlaced at an angle of about CO degrees From these pipes it passes into two independent J inde-pendent double discharge horizontal turbine wheels of the Leffcl make of 1800 horsepower each Directly connected to these wheels will be two threephase 1800 horsepower horse-power generators of the rotary field type The new station Is built of white brick and Is admirably arranged having hav-ing connected with it a complete repair shop and electrical laboratory for experimental ex-perimental purposes The current is dPlivoreiJ to Ih2 wires at a potential of 10000 volts which will be the highest voltage in longdistance transmission used In the world The intention of the promoters Is to first supply the local demands for light and power The remainder will be taken ta-ken to Ogden Salt Lake and Bingham and the building of lines for that purpose pur-pose will be commenced with the advent ad-vent of spring It will be connected at Bingham with the Tellurlde line from Provo thus making a continuous line for transmission of power of 130 miles in length the longest by odds of any in the world The company is to be distinctively dis-tinctively a wholesaler of electric energy en-ergy and will not enter the retail light market outside of Logan The principal stockholder and promoter pro-moter of the scheme Is Mr L L Nunn and to his energy and splendid business foresight Is due much of the success of I the enterprise While the Hercules company will confine con-fine its energies to the development of electric power its establishment has brought about what appears to be the certainty of an electric road being In I Cache valley Plans for Its construction II are already under serious consideration by i outside capitalists who have looked over the ground This road will circle the south end of the valley which is without railway facilities and will go north Into the big grainproducing1 districts of Lewlston and Clalk ton where more than half a million bushels of grain is unnually hauled to the railroad Facilities for power for manufacturing enterprises will be offered al rates that will likely draw other Industries here At present lights are furnished for 3313 cents each per month and power is correspondingly corre-spondingly low Should the market demand de-mand It the Installation of larger water r wa-ter wheels will make f it possible for the Hercules company to generate 5000 horseipower so that most any emergency emer-gency can be met It Is really a colossal colos-sal enterprise and Lpgan Is proud of it |
