Show SPORTS In the sporting world the past year proved a fairly successful one although al-though i might have been better The year 1SOO marked the Inception of league baseball In Utah and on this account Is likely to be long remembered among followers of sport Heretofore the national game had been represented represent-ed by merely semiprofessional and amateur teams without schedules or rules of government and the sport suffered suf-fered In consequence With tho Inauguration In-auguration of the UtahIdaho league early In the year the situation changed and the result was by long odds n better bet-ter kind of baseball than the State had ever seen before The league was of course largely experimental In Its nature na-ture and as might have been expected encountered many difficulties but when all Is taken Into consideration consideraton the venture proved a successful one and there Is little doubt but that Utah will continue to see league bal In the 1 future and n constantlyimproving quality of playing The league was organized or-ganized with Judge A G Horn of Ogden Og-den as president and James Cllpplnger of Salt Lake as secretary under the name of the UtahIdaho Baseball league Four clubs entered the league I and played out the season Salt Lake was represented by two teams the Short Line and Rio Grande Western Ogden and Pocatello Ida furnishing the other two teams comprising the league Outside players were brought in and with the beat of the local talent combined to furnish patrons of the game as good an article of baseball as the patronage warranted From four to six games a week were played 1 summer There were sore defects in the system which experience developed and they will so far as possible be corrected In the future The managers adopted different systems of compensating compen-sating players some teams paying regular reg-ular salaries while others engaged the players on a percentage basis This latter Idea proved one of the weaknesses weak-nesses of the league I threw too much executive power Into the han DoC D-oC the players who In some cases became be-came a little loose in their habits This resulted about the middle of the season smwn In musing the quality of the playing to deteriorate with E consequent lock of Interest on the Dart of the players The falling ofr on the part of two of the teams from this cause led to the division di-visIon of the percentage about the mid dle of the season and the playing of two schedules The Ogden team easily won both schedules and was awarded n silk pennant offered by The Trib une There is little doubt but Trb a league will again be formed during thc coming year I Is 1 possiblo during Josible o will be made a strictly slricty state affair Park City replacing Focatcllo but this matter will not b definitely decided until I 0mo thrfc next month FOOTBALL Tho football Mention wits not 0 remarkably re-markably successful one The Suit Lfcfce High School team which made f splendid record In 1S99 completed Us third sueceaaful senson without u score being mude against I The High School met and defeated two outside teams the Butte and East Denver High School teams by largo scores but persistently refused to moet Its old time rival the local YALCA The Y M tme C A team was a strong one this year suffering only one defeat that being administered by the University of Wyoming Wy-oming I The Y M C A met and defeated de-feated twice the Davis county team and also defeated tho University of Utah team The Y M C A claims the State championship while the University Univer-sity of Utah claims tho scholastic championship basing its claim on the fact tiat It defeated every school team against it and repeatedly challenged tile High School without getting a game All Hallows had rather a poor year getting few games ItS moat Important Im-portant contest was with the University Univer-sity of Utah which game All Hallows lost The minor teams all played many games and the season was u good one gmes for the smaller teams Grade school teams were organized In Salt Lake and I played several good games tho Lowell school carrying off the championship The lack of competition in the matter I of grounds has proved a handicap to I the baseball and football teams Tho removal of the University took away the use of the campus at the old 1 I grounds and left but ono place where football and biscball games could bo played a cinch which was worked to I the fullest limit This condition will not obtain again during the coming year in all probability as the University Universi-ty will have HH new campus in shape for use and the baseball league will probably contract for the preparation of another baseball park WHEEL RACING Tho bicycle racing season at the Salt Palace track wan another successful period and saw many worlds records broken A number of fine riders notable nota-ble among them being the Lawson and Turvillo brothers 1 > and J M Chapman passed the season In Salt Lake and put up a fine programme of racing which drew heavily all season The introduction introduc-tion of motorracing proved a successful success-ful innovation and aroused additional Interest in the work of the wheelmen There were some good road events and some competitions of wheel against horse but they did not prove very strong drawing cards GOLF The Introduction of golf Into Salt Lake occurred during the past season rho prominent society people of theI I city took up the game and under tire I mime of the Country club a most successful suc-cessful season of the ancient and ro alI al-I game ensued The old Gllmcr estate In the southeastern part of the city was I secured for the purpose and a line clubhouse club-house prepared The game proved very popular bore and the links were one of I the favorite resorts of society during the summer A number of fine trophies notably a magnlllcent silver cup given I by Samuel Newhousc were offered and Interest In the game continued until laicln the autumn HORSE RACING IonSnACING The horsemen held a few meets but the year wan not a notable one for that branch of sport Several Salt Lake horses went Eait and gave more than creditable accounts of themselves but horse racing was not ono of tho features of the year In Salt Lake Several Sev-eral meets of minor Importance were held principally on holiday and some fairly good races occurred however fulb the horsemen arc looking forward to a better year next season An effort n belter fort will be made to have the city placed on a good Western circuit and of 1C I this attempt succeeds lovers horseflesh will have an opportunity to horsefc see good events during 1901 TRAP SHOOTING The Salt Lake Gun club had a goodyear good-year and Is now In better condition than at any time In Its history while the Ogden club Is also In fine shape The Salt Lake club secured n long lease on grounds south of the Salt I Palace early In the year and his already al-ready erected a temporary clubhouse preparatory to a finer structure to be built during the coming year In all probability Shoots were hfrld weekly during the summer and are atll being held with line scores made at each fne nhoot The Salt Lako club met and defeated I de-feated tho Ogden club twle during the season and the friendIyrtvalry between f be-tween the two clubs promises much i good sport during the coming year BOATING The Salt Lake Rowing club which had a number of fine rowing contests on the lake during 1SS9 suspended business during 1900 and did not take I their shells out of tho boathouse during dur-ing tho season The club will probably I I take on a new lease of life next year and with a favorable attitude on tho 1 part of the SalteR management will matches resume Its regular programme of II I CRICKET I The Salt Lake Cricket cub had a good season The club secured Us own grounds this year and uL once proceeded Jlound9 ed to put them in shape the result being I be-ing a noticeable improvement In the play The cub met and defqated the Ogden club several times during the peason and will resume Its regular I matches as soon as the weather permits per-mits next year yearPUGILISM PUGILISM I Salt Lake has not been known a n pugilistic center for long years Tho I game has been wholly dead here for the past three years but some Indifferently Indif-ferently good lights were pulled oft during tho year A numbe of oas been and nevcrwuzzes In addition I addi-tion to local talent appeared and put up tun a few scraps but nothing at all heavy occurred The interest In the I sports seems to be on the Increase however and with favorable conditions something really good may he seen during dur-ing 1901 In Her Line Lne t fla his wife given up all her dressmaking < dress-making since she was married 7 maklng Mm Well I understand hes about I the only one who gets fits nowPhula dolphin Bulletin S |
