Eumpt slHf however has ruled high 0 throughout the year and buyers for the local market have been paving better 0 bet-ter prices 10lal for iat stuff than tLie killing kinds of call have brought here in I many years At few times during the summer and faJl have fat cows brought less than 3 cerils a pound fat steers have been selling at from 350 to 1 l I higher on this market The supply 0 locally has been diminished by coast locall sound killers who have been In evidence here this winter more largely than usual Several trainloads of sheep and cattle have recently gone out from the valleys that usually supply II the demands of this center to San 0 Francisco and packers agents in the latter city are continuing to exhaust latcr tho local supply of beef and mutton 0 It seems probable now that Salt Lake I 0 will be forced to obtain more dressed meats from the Eastern sources this I 0 winter than she has hitherto secured j t 0 and already shipments in refrigerator from the river I 0 cars have been begun rvcr 0 points Cattle values are lower in Utah where sales are being made by J a hend han they were a year ago The k sales as yet arc not numerous and no 0 contracts worth mentioning have been 0 entered into for spring delivery A 4 few dealers have been buying and re cclvlng stuff for shipment to southern ranches and their purchases J have been made at the decline indicated At Nephl l two weeks ago Saunders received re-ceived one train load of mixed cows and yearlings that cost SU and 20 These cattle are to be transferred to his range In Dixie and adding the charges for carrying them through the winter to the prices paid the cattle will cost 0 approximately 3250 less than the same cattle sold for last year i The prices are lower but the feeling among stockmen and cowbreeders generally gen-erally 5s one of confidence in the business busi-ness There never h been a time In the memory of the writer when the disposition to raise good stuff and get in shape to take care of It has possessed pos-sessed cowmen more than at present Within the last year more good cattle have been brought into the State than I were imported since 1S84 and higher prices have been paid for these 1anci I importations V EXHIBITS AT THE AI J The exhibition of the D A M sod 0 ely this fall was some Index to the feeling feel-Ing on that score and tho widespread interest in the forthcoming show and sale to be held here In January durIn the convention of the National LiveStock 0 Live-Stock association discloses that asoclatoI closeq th cattlemen of this State are keenly din posed to increase the number of their quality cattle holdings The confident exhibited by our home people and the 0 people or cattlegrowing States about 0 us Is due somewhat perhaps to th xtraordlnary by the Introduction of the best blood to Introducton be had and many of our breeders during dur-Ing the year have skirmished the Eastern East-ern States for the best types of different differ-ent breeds to add to their herds BETTER STOCK The tendency In Utah as all over tin West Is to handle few cattle but bcttei ones The people arc beginning to think that they can make more money out of the business If the herd Is kept down In number to 1 haycutting and feeding proportion When owners can be as surcd that all of the stuff can be not only successfully wintered but thai the cattle can be vigorously pushed In growth from lU youth forward the herds of the Stale will he again but up numerically numcrJca1y There Is still considerable draft made upon the breeding end of cattle In Utah for beef purposes but the sales of she stuff have not been so heavy durlnS the past year and the production Is measurably I meas-urably Increased in the seasons crop of calves Few sales of heifer calves I were recorded throughout the year People who are in the business fee confident that the growing of cattle In Utah can be profitably conducted and they arc laying their plans to continue In the business 0 The oldtime cowmen believe In the cow business as much as they ever did probably but not L few of them have included in their stack operations something some-thing of an Interest In sheep as well SHEEP AND WOOL The tilt in prices of fjhecp and wool early last year induced the Investment of large sums of money in sheep in this Slate Speculators began early in thlt year to contract wool clips locally at prices j or 5 cents a pound higher than were prevalent In 3S99 and before the shearing season came around many clips had been sold to Kaslern buyers at from 17 to 22 cents a pound l of the Utah clip might have been disposed dis-posed of at prices ranging from 17 to liC cents but our flockmastors were generally gen-erally confident that values would gc higher before the end of the season and it is doubtful whether more than 23 per cent of the product in this State was sold at the highest price Later in the year values dropped to 14 or 1C cents a pound and many of our people sold at these llgures The upward trend of wool values advanced the prices of sheep proportionately and In tho early months of the year all sorts of wellbred ewes in this State sold before be-fore shearing time at from H 1 to r per head The buyers were largely local people aid many of them were new Investors induced to go Into the business busi-ness because of the fancy values put on wool and sheep representatives ot Eastern establishments and especially the agents of such big concerns as Knollln Swift were not considerably in evidence as buyers last season and their absence from the field of competition competi-tion was noticeable later on when the selling of wethers and lambs became general Therefore the aggregate sales of tho wooly tribe were hardly as extensive ex-tensive as usual In the first place the 0 SALES OF LAMBS on the market did not return a profit able prices as wer realized from the sales of the previous year and the feeder feed-er buyers in the Eastern States were disinclined to fill feed lots on the prices demanded by the sellers here at home Corn prospects were not good during the fall months and the pastures did not justify extensive buying In the expectation ex-pectation of being able to do much with the pasture end of deals The llockmastcrs of Utah however Poi ably sold as numerously during the season sea-son as they have of recent years but their lamb crop last year was considerably erably larger than the year before and sales should have been greater There Is J no question but that Utah Is peculiarly l pecu-liarly well adapted to the successful growing of sheen The business has always been profitably conducted here The fiockowncrs of late years however aro forced to figure more and more for range privileges that insure a variety I of pasturage for their holdings and In these calculations their deals extend oel this and adjoining States I Is estimated that fully 30 per cent of the sheep owned by Utah men arc herded in other States now and several hun c < lcd thousands of Utah flocks are ta ken out of the Stale for several months feed during each year Most of those are sheared on the summer ranches and the clips thus taken off are forwarded for-warded to market from their temporary tempo-rary ranging grounds The wool clip of Utah was estimated last ycar at lV 000000 pounds 5000000 pounds addi tional should bo added to POlUS represent the l shearing outside of the State which would pounds give Utah a total clip of IS000000 0 FINE SHEEP There have been a great many sheep brought in during the year for breed Ing purposes and among these have been some of the most noted prize winners df the United States and Can ada The ilamboullet merinos have also been numerously imported al though many other types have also been introeluced Mr John H Seeloy of rt Pleasant has made several ship ments during the year from Ohio and one or mere from Canada and he has a representative now In Europe who is I arranging to send over a large Invoice of breeders from the best old country flocks The Aliens of Draper and Hanson Han-son uji in Cache valley have made several sev-eral importations and throughout the year past the demand upon these local I breeders for rams and ewes has been greater than their flocks could supply It is safe to say both as to sheep and cattle that in the next five years there will be ready sale for every good breeding animal our people can pro jr duce here at home at r piolitable price Yearling bulls brought into the State during the last year on the highgrade order sold readily throughout the Cat C-at from 75 to 100 and fair thorough bred of the shorthorn and Hereford types brought from 125 to 150 Vt Mnuv sales were made of indiId ian n s I of a more or less fancy family history at prices ranging from 300 to 600 and many of this kind of cattle could have been sold if buyers hud been given a chance to make selections near home The livestock Interests of this State I are beginning the new year under more favorable auspices Values are not as high as they were a year ago but our stockmen are confident that the prices on the market wH look up between now and spiVTig and as they are in good shape financially they = > in a position to await developments nor make hasty deals which would have L tendency to bear values The hay crop of the State was very light last year and few cattle or sheep are being fed this winter There will be light selling between now and spring spring in consequence and the 4 sence ° t trading should favor bullish tendencies if any effect Is felt from limited trad ing transactions 0 L1VE5C1 ASSOCIATION Tho meeting Tn annual session here In January of the National LiveStock association may result however In the I closing of many
