Show THE CALIFORNIA ELECTION. t The following speculations and prognostications on the California election elec-tion wero handed in yesterday by a gentleman who gives considerable uttention to polities. As the election comes off to-day the public will soon know how correct ho Li: A great deal of interest having been manifested iu regard to the Cnliforoia election, permit the undersigned to make a few prognostications based on ; past events aud future indications: tiinco the election of '67, when Ilaight carried the State by upwards of 5,000, the Democrats havo twice carried California once by a majority of about 2,000, and asraiu by at least J 0,000.. Grant, in '08, had between 400 and 600 of a majority. Taking Ilaight's majority of 5,000 as the standard, stan-dard, we wili reckon up the debits and credits of tho Democratic side thus: Booth's personal popularity and Ilaight's shortcomings in office will coat them 2,000 votes, whieh will mako a republican re-publican incrcaso ol'4,000,and the negro vote will add 2,000 to the Republican side. This would show a Republican Repub-lican majority of 1,000. Then credit tho "untorritied" with the Republican split iu Sau Francisco 1,000 votes-would votes-would place the account about even. After studying over the various minor considerations attached to the two tickets, I will venture tho following predictions : Ilaight's majority over Booth will not raoe far from 500 ; the remainder of ttie Democratic ticket leading him by perhaps 200, with the exception of Jo. Hamilton for Attorney General, who will run ahead by from 500 to 1,000, aud be elected by amajority of 1,000 to 1,500. For Congress: First district Democratic Demo-cratic majority, 2,000; 2d, Republican Re-publican majority, not over 500, perhaps much less; 3d close, Democratic Demo-cratic majority, 50 to 200. The Democrats will carry the Legislature and elect Win. M. Gwin for U. S. Senator. Wo shall see. Horn Riri.K. |
