The Democrats are holding a mect-i mect-i ing to-night. San Francisco, 4.- The (Jioat Cen-Itral Cen-Itral Mining company, Nevada, capital $1,000,000, was incorported to-day. Tho case of Canlield, clerk of the 4th ward polls, the lirst party arrested ar-rested in California under the not of Congress pending for the supervision of registration, came bof'ore U. S. commissioner com-missioner Sawyer this afternoon. Nathaniel Na-thaniel Holland, V. S. supervisor of registration, and also candidate for school director, of that ward, said information in-formation was furnished him, aud ho went with his deputies to tho 4th ward registry office and demanded to sec the poll list. Canficld, who was the only person there, showed him tho printed list without any supplemental names. Holland asked him if he had iany other list, and he replied "yes, here is a list I made out from memoranda memor-anda handed me before breakfast this morning." This was on Saturday last. This list was on a blank full list form, but was not authenticated or certified cer-tified to by the officers, nor signed by the clerk. L'pon this he was arrested on a warrant charging him with fraud in 1 preparing a false poll list. The prisoner pris-oner was defended by Frank Smith and Lawyer Quirt, between whom and Hillard some sharp words passed. The defence asked that tho prisoner bo discharged upon the ground fhat no offence was shown, ns the list of names shown could not be used as a poll list in any event, and its preparation prepara-tion was not an offence under the law. Commissioner Sawyer ovorrulcd the motion, and the defence then offered to put defendant on the stand to testify in his own behalf, and show that the list seized was not the poll list at all, but merely a list of names taken down in advance, as parties applied to him with certificates of transfer from the great register and other wards, to facilitate facil-itate business when the board should meet for the presentation of applications applica-tions to-day, according lo'law. The commissioner decided that the prosecution prose-cution was brought under the United States law and defendant could not have the benefit of his own testimony. Tho defence then offered in evidence the certificate transcripts from the great register, in the case of each of the twenly-lbur names on the list, to show that the parties named on the list were all voters and entitled to registration, which the commissioner refused to admit, ad-mit, as iu his opinion the gist of the offense charged was that the poll list had been prepared on Saturday last, 1 one day in advance of the legal time, which was in itself a violation of the law whether tho names registered were t hose of legal voters or not. The de- j fence thcu asked for a continuance' until Friday next. Nevada City, Cab, 4. The Republicans Repub-licans arc having a grand torchlight procession to-night.
