| Show I ACHI RESENTED I I I Mayors Clerk Attacks Councilman man OMeara for His Criticism LIVELY WHILE IT LASTED THE ROW OCCURRED AT THE JOIXT BUILDING 1 Statement Regarding Apuroprla tioiiH to the 3IeKny Boys The Cause or the Trouble Xo Serious Harm Done The dull work of auditing bills and transcribing routine business by the council committees last night was enlivened en-livened in the early part of the evening even-ing by a melee between Councilman OMeara and the mayors clerk Archie McKay The cause of the fracas was an article that appeared in last evenings even-ings News and which the latter construed con-strued a reflecting upon his personal I integrity as well as that of the McKay family in general Eyewitnesses to the affair tell the following story Mr OMeara was seated in the anteroom of the council chamber attending a committee meeting meet-ing when Archie McKay entered and requested him to step out into the I hall Mr OMeara complied and when the two had reached the hall McKay I asked the councilman from the Fifth if he was correctly quoted in articles I in the evening paper Yes sir I was correctly quoted was the reply Will you retract what you said was the prompt and rather forcible query that followed 0 No sir I will not retract one Biff Slap Bang For a moment the councilman saw a million stars He had read about Bob Fitzsimmons killing Con Riordan and not wanting to become entangled in the complications that might have followed if he had planted his terrible left in Archies bread basket the councilman made for the council chamber His assailant felt considerably consider-ably encouraged and then becoming really bold took up the trail of the councilman but happily several of the members intercepted him and OMeara got safely to the mayors office There he encountered Archies father who I expressed the opinion that his son had done right A scene however was averted and after an outpouring of wrath peace flitted around the room and nothing remained to mark the event unless the words used were sul phuric enough to engrave themselves on the massive walls for future gener ations to read The trouble grew out of an interview I with O Meara published in the evening Paper wherein the councilman calls counciman cls attention to two items of appropria tions out of the mayors contingency fund One is the payment to Archie McKay the mayors clerk of 2005 the voucher indicating thatit was for railroad Toad ticket for a ipauper The other ttem was for 100 which was paid to Roy McKay a brother of the clerk I also out of the contingent fund a traveling expanses in examining elec I the light plants and to inv I I trc lght investigate the I question of electric queston lighting for the I benefit of the city I is alleged that the latter voucher I states states that this expenditure was au I thorized by the committee on improvements r improve-ments Mr OMeara and Mr Callister both members of the committee have no knowledge of any such action and this caused OMeara to talk rather plainly about the chief executives action I ac-tion in drawing on the contingent fund without authority from the committee Mr OMeara was seen at his home last night but there was certainly I nothing In his appearance to indicate that he had been < a party to a scrap Fighting wont prove anything ana I an-a he said What I said In the interview in-terview was true and the vouchers are there to prove it Charlie McKay was also seen but had nothing to say except that Mr OMeara he thought had cast aspersions asper-sions on his family and he resented it |
