Candidates Democratic 3Ieniucrs Will Caucus ThIs Evening For President and Sneaker Tlie Gossip Yesterday Yesterday was no exception to tie rule that applies to ail countries mad in all sections of all countries whema i political crisis is approaching whwi the passage of each draws the eventful I time that much nearer Yesterday brought its developments to add interest I inter-est to the senatorial controversy and while t be sure they were mostly in the nature of rumor still they were interesting inter-esting in that they Wad the effect of making the managers of candidates put on their thinking caps and begin to lay new plans for the emergency should I they prove true in which event many a well matured scheme would be completely com-pletely upset F A FARNSWORTH BOOM II The rumor which contributed most to the overturning of the plans of managers man-agers if true and which furnished l1he greatest surprise of the day was to the effect that P T Farnsworth hail decided to become a candidate The rumor had it that he was to be injected into the contest a the candidate candi-date of the people in opposition to Frank J Cannon The report found plenty of persons who gave it cre dance in the light of the constantly growing street teJk Chat the Ogden politician is persona non grata to a great majority of the people I Mr Farnsworth could not be seen last evening to ascertain the truth lof the report but whether or not it had any foundation in fact it carried a feeling feel-ing of alarm into the Cannon camp and gave Manager Ben Rich a protracted pro-tracted fit of hard thinking Finally the editor of the Silver Hammer Ham-mer of Idaho called in his lieutenant lieu-tenant the Hon Joseph Stanford of Ogden and together they consulted deciding in the end not to be too greatly great-ly alarmed until they were assured there was real danger of Mr Farnsworth Farns-worth becoming a candidate The rumor filled the enemies of Frank J with joy and they hurriedly dispatched messengers to various sources in quest of authentic information informa-tion but no definite confirmation or denial of the story a obtained Should Mr Farnsworth enter the race there is no doubt Frank Js chances would be greatly injured for he would in all probability draw I heavily upon the south for support The southern delegation has something like twenty votes and is supposed to be Fank Js stronghold NO CAUCUS POSSIBLE A matter which was very generally discussed at all the senatorial headquarters head-quarters during the day was the probability prob-ability of securing a Republican caucus cau-cus on senatorial candidates by the result of which the participants shall be bound II I could not be definitely learned that such was the case but it appeared to be the consensus of opinion among Republican leaders that it will be impossible im-possible to secure enough signatures to a call to insure a caucus and a successful cl cessful issue therefor The idea seems to have taken a general hold upon the members that a caucus binding them to vote in accordance with the I selections made in it would not be productive pro-ductive of the best results Each member I mem-ber is naturally wedded to his own choice and as many fear a caucus I might be so manipulated that their various favorites would be shut out and they be compelled to vote for candidates can-didates not to their liking it is not at all probable that yesterdays rumor will become a material reality but that the battle be fought out on the floor in joint session THEY WANT GEORGE Q I was stated last evening upon what aippeared to have been reliable authority author-ity that a letter was recently received by one of the most prominent politicians ticians among the people of the city which was signed by General Clark siged son of Iowa and Senator Stephen B Elkins which stated that the election of George O Cano to the United States Senate would meet the unanimous unan-imous approval of Congress and of the Remiblican leaders of the United States and expressing the hope that he would be one of the selections from Utah This was another of the rumors of the day which created consternation in more than one mans mind and opened a wide field fa reflection for politicians PRESIDENT CANNON RETURNS President George Q Cannon and President Joseph A Smith returned to this city yesterday afternoon on the overland limited and immediately drove up town Matters other than polte claimed Mr Cannons attention atten-tion and it was impossible to find him although Herald reporters called at the church office and drove down to his home However Mr Cannon fully endorses the statements already made in his behalf to the effect that he is not in any sense a candidate for the Senate TRUMBO A SURPRISE From indications about the Trumbo headquarters and from the number of members and men who have been prominent figures and potent factors in Utah politics for years who call almost constantly at the Gardo house it looks very much as though Colonel Trumbo has a surprise up his sleeve for those people have asserted confidently con-fidently that he would not cut any figure in the contest when I came to the voting or at best that i would be a very sorry one The talk of a surprise being sprung from the Trum bo camp was quite general but his henchmen are trained and will not leak One of the colonels lieutenants lieuten-ants is William Glasmann editor of the Ogden Standard who was formerly a business associate of F J Cannon and who now charges his former partner with all sorts of trickery and treachery Glasmann ha his axe out and is whacking away at Cannons fences with some effect THE HEADQUARTERS The various headquarters that have been opened have already become very popular loitering places or loafing places to put it more characteristic of he < gang which hangs about each one There Is no difficulty in getting a crowd for they are a good thing for the < angel about town w < ho find the cigars to their liking much better than they a accustomed to and cheap too the expensevof their time to help swel the throng being the only one and that is an tat not figured at a very high rate by most of them tlm Colonel Trumbos ami Judge Trmbos Judg Ben oiatts are the most popUlar so far and are usually well filled Frank Cannoas quarters at the Templeton are less frequented fre-quented fox there is a dearth of cigars there and the place is correspondingly less appreciated ARTHUR BROWN OPENS A modest set of apartments were opened by Arthur Brown yesterday on the first floor of the Cullen where that gentlemans friends can meet and where he can meet them As yet they are not presided over by anyone any-one in particular and they are run on a very unonstentious plan Harry Mc Callum is expected to be the factotum if a manager becomes necessary MEMBERS ARRIVE All the members with but few exceptions ceptions had arrived last evening and hotel lobbies during the early part of the night presented an animated appearance ap-pearance People with something on their minds swooped down upon the members from the outside whom they had not been able to approach before and drove the fellows nearly to distraction dis-traction An applicant for position tugged at one sleeve while a lobbyist took possession of the other and shared the ear alternately But they stood up under it well knowing it was only the first taste of what they must endure for days to come Several conferences con-ferences were held during the evening to discuss organization and candidates for minor places but nothing definite was accomplished with reference to what will eventually be done THE SENATE PRESIDENCY The presidency of the senate i is now supposed lies between George 1f Cannon and George Sutherland of this city Mr Cannon has a strong following and is looked upon practically practic-ally certain of winning although Mr Sutherland friends is by no means without THE 3PEAKERSHIP For speakership of the house there is now thought by many to be but one candidate or at least but one who has any show of presiding over the house Presley Denny of Beaver is expected to be chosen without difficulty J M Bolitho of Sevier was a candidate and a likely one but he is desirous of seeing his friend William H Clark of Richfield made sergeantatarms and will not stand in his way by standing for the speakership He may however I how-ever make the contest if his wishes in this respect are not conceded B B Critchlow has retired from the te race in order to allow as much patronage as possible to remain in the city REPUBLICAN CAUCUS The whole matter or organization will doubtless be settled today at a caucus of Republicans which is to be held at the joint building at 020 oclock for that purpose pur-pose THE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS The Democratic members will hold a joint caucus at Democratic headquarters In the Hooper building at 8 oclock this evening to decide as to whether they shall stand together and vote for Joseph L Rawlins and Moses Thatcher for senators as Instructed by the state convention and to consider other matters 1R CRITCHLOWS RESOLUTION Realizing that there will be need of rapid action on the part of the legislature legis-lature B B Critchlow has hit upon a i Ulan which he thinks will expedite matters mat-ters very satisfactorily As soon as the I i ser organized he will therefore introduce in-troduce a joint resolution providing that all matters of legislation which the constitution con-stitution requires the legislature to enact a well as all others pertainng to the Immediate needs of the state be referred nPs ferred to the proper committees of the House and Senate at once that they consider them jointly and report back bills on the various subjects I this is dona without waiting for members to introduce bills the needy points will speedily be covered |
