Show THE CASE OF HAWAII The Chicago TimesHerald discusses the case of Hawaii at length and comes to the conclusion that it is one where the Monroe doctrine might very well be applied It nays Here is a chance for a rational application ap-plication of the Monroe doctrine We cannot suffer any Asiatic monarchy to colonize what is already in truth and fact an American colony President Cleveland has here an open incontestable incon-testable and patriotic opportunity Here will be a victory for the Monroe doctrine accomplished in peace and free from the possible taint that might attach to any Monroe doctrine victory accomplished by war Hawaii may present a chance for annexation but there can be no rational application of the Monroe doctrine to it That doctrine was for the prevention of the colonization of the American continents by European powers and likewise the extension to them of their systems of government How then can it be picked up and carried across three thousand miles of ocean and applied to a group of Pacific Pa-cific islands If it can be made applicable I applic-able in Hawaiis case there is nothing to prevent it applying In any and all conceivable cases The Monroe doctrine was never a doctrine of annexation in fact it was the very reverse To attempt to apply ap-ply it to the Hawaiian Islands would be a plain perversion of It It Is utter nonsense to say that the little republic is already in truth and fact an American Ameri-can colony An Independent government govern-ment Is not a colony no matter b whom it may have been settled originally origin-ally If the Monroe doctrine is applicable ap-plicable to Hawaii on the theory that It is an American colony then it is equally applicable to the American colonies in London Paris and Berlin The question of the policy of annexing an-nexing the little republic to this country coun-try is one wholly separate and distinct dis-tinct from the Monroe doctrine and to attempt to distort it in the manner proposed is wholly unwarranted and would meet with popular disapproval And those who would make it show neither common sense nor patriotism The Monroe doctrine is clean cut and allows of no misapprehension by any who care to understand it |
