Show I ADA3IS POISONED II Claims an Unknown Man Put Strychnine In His Drink Inquiry into Adams condition elicited elicit-ed the fact that when the case was dismissed dis-missed he was laying at his home 349 South West Temple street in a most critical condition suffering from the effects of some poison probably strychnine strych-nine His story Is that he left his home shortly after moon and walked up town There he met a man whose name he does not know but with whom he is well acquainted by sight and who follows fol-lows the avocation of a gambler This man invited him into a saloon on the east side of Main street near the GodbePitts drug store There are several sev-eral saloons in that neighborhood and Adams says he does not know the name of the particular one they entered enter-ed but that he could gx there His friend called for whisky and he took I soda water He says when his glass was filled the man put his hand over ifi and pushed it towards him saying There drink Adams theory is that in doing so the man dropped the poison into it He did not detect anything peculiar pe-culiar about the taste of the soda water as he drank it quickly He talked with the man about the Fyler case and Adams says he advised him to go on the stand and give his testimony remarking I re-marking that if ha didn t want the I parties convicted he could shape his answers so a not to give any damaging evidence against them This however he declined to do sayIng that If he went on the stand he would tell all he knew Soon after taking the drink he and his companion parted company Adams walked aloiur First South street to West Temple md began to feel very unwell He turned down West Temple and when he got as far as the Tribune office he felt so ill he could go no further fur-ther and an acquaintance passing in a buggy gave him a lift and 1 drove him to his house SYMPTOMS OF STRYCHNINE Dr S Hughes was at once called it being then 115 oclock The doctor found him suffering from strong symptoms symp-toms of strychnine poisoning and at once administered 1 an emetic and otherwise other-wise treated him for poisoning Dr Hughes called Dr McLean to assist him and the two worked with him all afternoon His condition for a longtime long-time was exceedingly critical the spasms being frequent and violent Late In the night he improved and atlas at-las accounts a resting easy with Q fair prosnect that he would pull throirrh Judge Powers hearing of Adams critical condition informed County Attorney At-torney Whittemore and United States Commissioner Sommer sent a messenger messen-ger to Assistant United States Attorney Attor-ney Richards and these gentlemen arranged ar-ranged at once tto take his depositions Mr Whittemore Proceeded with his stenographer to Adams house and took down his statement He was also seen by Deputy United States Marshal Timmony Detective Sheets and others To the latter he is reported to have said that he was very averse to making any depositions and would only consent to do so when told that he was likely to die He finally however did so on the condition that the depositions be not given out unless he > did die It is said the depositions are very damaging to both defendants and the prosecution claim that they have sev Continued on Page 3 i |
