Show THE FOSSILS OF CAMP FLOYD AH Interesting Letter on This Subject Sub-ject From Prof Etumoiis Not long ago an article was published publish-ed In The Herald concerning the fossils fos-sils of Camp Floyd district in which It was questioned whether they were I of a plant or an animal nature Since then Mr James W Neill has received I a letter from Professor Emmons United States geologist on the subject I which reads as follows Washington D C Nov 6 1895 Mr James Neill Salt Lake City Utah Dear SirI have just received the report re-port of our paluntolgist on the fossils in the black shale which you gave me when I was In your office last summer He reports five new species pf bryozoans bryo-zoans fenlestella from the black I I shale and Quite a number of brachiopods brachio-pods fropi another epecinjen T5jhich he I seems to consider from the matrix as probably a different horizon from the shale When I took the specimens from you I got the idea that they were all from the same bed viz a black shale that had been cut by the new shaft on the Golden Gate property In view of the I unexpected findings of new forms the horizon becomes of great interest I shall be glad if you will tell me more about the localities from which my specimens come and if you should happen to go out there I wish you would get some more of them giving careful data as to the horizon Yours truly S F EMMONS Mr Neill says that the fossils from the black shale came from the Magpie shaft and that the fenis I tella Is a coral resembling the leaves of a plant and is often taken for such The other piece with the brachlopods was from the surface on the Protective Tariff which is undoubtedly the black shale only bleached and he Is of the opinion that the strata is carboniferous I carbonifer-ous |
