Show A MERRY WAR STARTED The John Scowcroft Sons Co Defies De-fies the Coffee Trust Law May be Invoked I became generally known yesterday yester-day that the house of John Scowcroft Sons company had come under the ban of the house of Arbuckle Bros and that the latter firm had cut oft the former from receiving the staple commodity com-modity Arlosa coffee This was due to the fact that the Ogden firm insisted on treating the goods as their property prop-erty after they had paid for i The Arbuckle Bros claim the right to dictate the price at which they shall sell the coffee In other words they are endeavoring to maintain a coffee monopoly and while their customers are willing to sell at cheaper prices and be cpntent with lesser l profits they will not permit this The John Scow croft Sons company threw down the gauntlet and defied the trust Mr Scowcroft said yesterday in answer an-swer to questions Yes Itis true we are cut off from the salp of Arbuckles coffee The facts are Arbuckle Bros sell their Ariosa I hrnnrt of pnffoo on what is known a the consignment 01 plan We order the I amount we require for our business which has been running from 20000 to 32500 onepound packages per month Arbuckle Bros bill the goods a what Is known as the card rate which Is the price at which we sell the eOn e-On making our remittance to Arbuckle Bros we deduct lY cents per pound from the invoice and which Is supposed sup-posed to be our profit on the transaction transac-tion but before any firm can purchase this coffee Arbuckle Bros require a I signed contract that the above conditions condi-tions will be carried out failing which a fine of 50 is imposed on the violator and his supply of coffee Is cut off until I un-til the line Is paid This fine was levied against us on the 3rd Inst Arbuckle Bros claiming we have cut the price on their coffee which we do not deny as we can operate the business for less of 100 pounds considering than 150 per case oulds I sidering the large quantity we handle j Of course we signed the contract we had to i was the only way we could get the coffee but notwithstanding this fact we have always asserted our right when we had bought and paid for goods to sell them at whatever price we pleased In fact give them away If we wanted to The 50 fine is stand on prin a mere trille to us we sand ciple cipleTes we are making arrangements for another brand of coffee which we I will shortly Introduce and which owing to its good quality will we think be popular with the public Mr Scowcrcft has been lookinG UP his legal rights in the matter and It Is understood that competent attorneys the consider the discrimination against Scowcroft company a direct violation of the state constitution of the antitrust laws cn stitution A lively time is looked for unless the Arbuckle Bros recede from their position as the Scowcroft people seem to be a fully determined in this dispute over coffee as the Boston people peo-ple were over tea a hundred years ago The Washakee Club The Washakee club has recently been organized In Ogden I Is the outgrowth I I out-growth of the former W J Bryan i Silver club The officers elected are I C A Smurthwalte
