Show THESE MfN DSOWN IT SAY THE TRIBUNE DOES NOT REPRESENT YOUNG UTAH UTA Show How and Why It Has Slandered Slander-ed the Young Element and the Old and How I Injures the State Salt Lake City Feb 23 1SS9 To the Editor of The Herald Sir I is the experience of many that when any correspondence is addressed to the Salt Lake Tribune that In the opinion opin-ion of Its managers is antagonistic to their interests or opposed to their policy It receives but scant courtesy It is for this reason that we do not address our article to the editor of that paper Had I the question been one that anected iho Heraid or the Deseret News wo feel confluent tney WOUld navo enough Americanism Amer-icanism to give fair play i is very apparent to the reading public pub-lic that the editors or managers of the Salt Lake Tribune are again suffering tom one of those periodical spasms that may be called Xoung Utanphobla and from day to day Its convulsions become more violent For several months past scarcely an Issue can be bunS wnich docs not contain cither a frantic appeal to Young Ltan to come out ot the alleged slavery that binds them or a sneering accusation directed against one or more officials of the Mormon church I Is a matter of record furnished by its own nles that no one m the community is secure from Its venomous attacks except ex-cept perhaps a few who are willing 10 re nond amen to its utterances regardless re-gardless of consistency truth or even decency Neither age nor sex Is consid erea it will scott at a man while at prayers slander a woman in the privacy of her home ridicule defenseless children before they are old enough to talk and dead will even profane the cnaracter ot the deadWith With an unlimited supply of stereotyped stereo-typed phrases such as whipping Into line etc It strikes right and left at random and by precept certainly not by example seeks to pose to Young Utah as the apostle or liberty and truth As regards the attacks open otliclals In tho dominant church we shall say nothing believing they and the church can take care of themselves but we wish here and now once and for all to repudiate the Salt Lake Tribune as the oracle of Young Utah While conceding Its right to exist as a newspaper we most emphatically deny Its authority to act as sponsor for or to represent Young Utah unless It can furnish somali proof in addition to and Independent of its own assumption The organ of the Mormon churcn has the name of Us president In Us appropriate place thus attesting Us authority but In what part of the Tribune shall wo look for the official stamp of Young Utah conferring upon it toe apparently exclusive exclu-sive right to speak for and to them AVo were informed recently by this selfap pointed champion of Young Utah thai a delegation of Young Utah wallet upon i and assured i ot their the delegations I dele-gations support and as a matter of tact twothirds of all the editorials in I thlrs al eiorias tho Tribune for the last three months or more have had the Young Utah idea I as a pretext we wont say foundation IOf thus exhibiting Us constant anxiety for that class I The Inference Is thrown out repeatedly that there is In the Mormon church an element who are pining for religious liberty erty and that the Tribune has been retained re-tained to secure this desired boon for them Bosh When was the document conferring the honor of being the organ ofYoung Utah given to the Tribune Who drew It up AVho signed i A favorite and oftquoted authority of the Tribune has said that a long and continued habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives It a superliclal appearance of being right and because no one has called a halt on the Tribune people foe unlawfully and unjustly arrogating to themselves the right to teach advise and voice the sentiments of Young Utah sentmenls they are now beginning to really think I that their position as dictators and advisers ad-visers of Young Utah Is unassailable AVe take this opportunity of reminding the Tribune editors that Young Utah Is and always has been chiefly composed of eiher Mormons or those whose parents were Mormons that this class is the large majority and therefore they are decidedly and unflinchingly at variance with the dishonest unflignltted and in many instances cowardly methods of that paper which slanders their parents ridicules ridi-cules their religion misconstrues their motives defames to the world the state that gave them birth and which advises the saloon antI brothel as desirable adjuncts ad-juncts to bring about the Tribune ideal of freedom and civilization That there is a class of Young Utah who being birds of a feather will endorse the tactics of the Tribune we do not deny but we assert that this class taking the state through are numerically an inslgnficant mlncrty For the enlightenment enlight-enment of the Tribune we wish to gO on record as denying emphatically their of repeated statement that Young Utah is in slavery to the priesthood and to the contrary we affirm that Young Utah is free absolutely that politically relijr I i lously socially and In every other respect lit I is as independent and untrammelled as I I any other citizens of the United States and the undersigned all bone lido representatives repre-sentatives of Young Utah hereby enter I Tribune a vigorous for protest Us willful against persistent the Salt Lake anti I malicious misrepresentation and we i lgUttatei dpa charge that the managers of that paper i I aro materially Injuring the business interests inter-ests of the state notwithstanding their I denials and despite their squirming reth ods to escape the responsibility I Last we atrm that this letter and protest is voluntary on the part of all I whio have signed tf anti we feel
