been published They clearly show the patience pa-tience with which Caprivi bore all the Insults and attacks of his foes but they also show how he felt their stings In one replying to a correspondent who wished to see his honor vindicated Caprivi said I must declineto comply with your wish and give you the motives which guided me Not an inconsiderable part of my motives concerned Bismarck and I I may say with all due recognition of I the brilliancy of his person and our rat times that I saw even before I became chancellor what a great drawback draw-back the reverse of that medal showed Prince Bismarck as has often been stated managed his home policy by I the same means he employed in foreign pohitls Thus the nation was in danger dan-ger of seeing its moral standard lowered low-ered But I do not think i right to enter into more details or particulars about this now A few other lines in the letter expressed ex-pressed the melancholy which Capiivi felt after his resignation He said I is hard to bl obliged in ones work to dispense with the acquiescence of those for whom one acts and it Is still harder In old age to be separated from circles in which one has lived through a long life But the hardest of all Is to be exposed with tied hands to public disregard and be obliged to look on and see what one believed one had created for the good of the state demolished again I had to abandon many dear relations in order to remain faithful to my convictions I could not foresee this I remained faithful to my king and to myself This belief nobody boy can take from me As for the rest people may think and say what they like c |
