Show ANOTHfR fORGfR CASt M MATES ARRESTED AND ADMITS HIS GUILT Six Charges Against Him But the Total Amount of the Checks I Only Sixty Dollars With the evidence of the forgery of six cheeks against him Max Mayer was arrested by Detectives Sheets and Gll lesple on Second South yesterday afternoon af-ternoon and placed in the city jal He admitted his guilt to the officer statIng stat-ing that he had been driven to the forgeries for-geries by his pressing need of money The checks were drawn at recent dates 0 various banks of this city and each one calls for 10 The forged names are R Goldberg Co and 3L Glassberg clothing dealers on Second South the former being used In live checks and the latter in one The I check fourd on Mayer when arrested is drawn on McCorniek < Co payable toE to-E L Spencer with the name of M 31aKterg as drawer The payees name is endorsed on the back il Majers handwritIng Five checks had been caahed and returned re-turned by the banks as worthless as follows a 1 Commercial National bank pay toE to-E L Carter HO signed by R Goldberg Gold-berg endorsed by E L Carter Th H Foley Phil Margetts 2 National Bank of the Republic pay to W L Taylor flO signed by R Goldberg Co endorsed en-dorsed by W L Taylor and M A Miles 3 Walker Bros Bankers pay to A Terry 10 signed by R Goldberg Gold-berg < Co endorsed by A Terry Phil t D Yuan Fritz Riepen J R Benbrook and P J Conway Co 4 National Bank of the Republic pay to G L Brown 10 signed by R Goldberg endorsed en-dorsed by G L Brown A Williams and L W Ditman 5 National Bank of the Republic pay to E L Terry 10 signed by R Goldberg Co endorsed en-dorsed by E L Terry ana W H Foley Fo-ley The ffrgeries were discovered several days ago but Mayer dropped out of sight for a couple of days and the detectives de-tectives also worked at the disadvantage disadvan-tage of not being able to secure an accurate ac-curate description of him Yesterday however after the arrest he was iden tifitl by the parties who cashed the checks for him Including Bruce Johnson John-son Pete Ny Strom Fritz Riepenj Phil Margetts and M A Miles to whom he represented himself according to the various names appearing as payees In the checks Mayer is a Hebrew about 25 years of age small in stature light moustache and well dressed He gives his occupation occu-pation as a druggist He has only been in Salt Lake a few weeks and during that time Mr Glassburgr says he has giv en him considerable aid He had in his poseccbJon letter heads from the Knutsford and Kenyon hotels but It appears he has been stopping at the California House In his possession were found numerous blank checks on various Salt Lake banks From a mass of correepondence taken from him it is learned that he has operated in Mobile Mo-bile Ala Atchison Kan and Ogden A telegram directed to Mobile solicits funds An abundance of private correspondence corre-spondence was found among his effects His penmanship Is excellent |
