Show BOBBING THE MAILS Desperate Crooks Detected in tie Act I last sight Carrier Shade Fired Two Shots at Them but They Got Aivay With the Letters Let-ters Broke the Lock The success of the hold up who assaulted as-saulted Mail Carrier Slade at the Valley Honse corner a few nights ago inspired another daring attempt last night Mr Slade was making his last round to the mail boxes and on going up State street he saw two men standing in front of the box a half block south ot the theatre They walked off hurriedly as he approached ap-proached and on arriving at the place the carrier found the box open and empty He took in the situation at a glance and called upon the men to stop at the same time drawing his pistol and running towards them The fellows also commenced com-menced running and Mr Slade fired at I them twice but unfortunately neither I shot took effect I The noise of the shooting attracted the attention of Officer3 Seigfus and Wilson I who started after the daring thieves The crooks quickly disappeared down one of the alleys leading from State street to Commercial and were lost but a number I of letters which they had dropped in their flight were found scattered along the I alley It is stated that the stolen mail con tainedchecks and drafts amounting to several thousand dollars An examin I ation of the box showed that the lock had I been broken off probably with a hammer I ham-mer All crooks know that the law fixes avery a-very severe penalty for crimes of this character and experience has taught them that the government leaves no stone unturned un-turned to bring to justice men who tamper tam-per witn the mails This simply goes to show that these crooks belong to the most dangerous class Fortunately Mail Inspector Lawrence is in the city and its dollars to doughnuts that he will have the fellows in jail before be-fore many days |
