Show THE WHITE METAL Compromises on the Silver Subject maturing ma-turing to Stop Bullion Purchase WASHINGTON Jan GThe first active Btep towards a report t the House on a proposition for a repeal of the Sherman silver bullion purchase act was taken up this morning by the House committee on banking and currency which briefly dis cusses the repeal of the act end then ad jorned until tomorrow afternoon when it will further consider the matter Chairman Bacon stated to his colleagues at the last meeting the committee had informally in-formally passed upon the banking features of the Andrew bill and authorized him to make any changes necessary in the tan t-an third sections which authorize national na-tional banks t issue circulation up to S the par value of the bonds deposited andre and-re uc the tax or circulation Mr Bacon stated that on examination he thought there was no occasion for making amendments amend-ments and accordingly had not any amendment to the bill to report I The committee plunged immediately into section four which repeals the silver bullion purchase features of the Sherman act Representative Gate offered a substitute substi-tute providing for the stoppage of silver purchases and coinage into dollars the bullion now in the treasury It did not provide for a return to the Bland act but as n member expressed it stopped silver purchases by government entirely and made the United States treasury cease to be a safe deposit company for silver bullion bul-lion Mr Townsend of Colorado a free coinage coin-age man met this move with a counter motion that the section repealing the Sherman act be reported back to the House with the recommendation that it be referred to the committee properly having jurisdiction over it namely the Coinage Bland committee No vote of any sort was had but Mr Townsend was convinced by the reception j recep-tion his motion met that there had been j a determination reached to press the repeal I re-peal of the Sherman act and that the committee intended to take jurisdiction of the subject The bill was then dropped until tomorrow j Meanwhile several compromises on the silver subject maturing members hoping hop-ing t find some common ground on j wuich an agreement may be reached that will stop the present bullion purchases j I The Cabinet Meeting WASHINGTON Jan 6President JleetnJ Harrison I Har-rison and cabinet today had before them the question of commerce to and from points in llic Jiiited States over Canadian J roads The matter was discussed at some S length The president will shortly send a message t the House in reply to the resolution of last July but what recommendations recom-mendations i any he will make are not yet decided upon |
