Show TJIAT AMNESTY PROCLAMATION An Interesting Story Regarding I from the Washington Post WASHINGTON Jan CSpecialThe Washington Post which is edited by Frank Hutton who was President A i urs postmastergeneral has this to s v today regarding the presidents recent re-cent amnesty proclamation There is an interesting story in connection con-nection with proclamation of the president pres-ident published yesterday granting amnesty am-nesty to the Mormons Fully a year ago Senator Dubois and Senator Paddock urged upon the president the advisability S of taking this action I was shown that it would be a most popular move lor the administration and would in all probability proba-bility lead into the Republican party hundreds of these Mormons who were residing re-siding in the states of Idaho Wyoming Montana and Colorado 4 the of Early last summer department justice informed the president that he had sufficient authority to grant the amnesty am-nesty so generally desired but no action was taken by him When the campaign was at its height Chairman Carter of the Republican national committee wrote to Senator Dubois to ask him i it woud not be a rood political move t absolve ab-solve these Mormons from the penalty of the law Senator Dubois at once replied that it would be a most excellent thing i Still the amnesty was not granted nothing noth-ing being heard of the proposed proclamation procla-mation except a letter saying that the president was very slow to act I O course the amnesty will be gladly availed of by the Mormons whom it reaches but they have been kept waiting so long for the relief that they are not likely to be as grateful now as they would have been some months ago The value of the proclamation as a votegetter for the Republican party has also long since disappeared |
