Show WORK OF CONGRESS The Jnarantine Bill Occupies the Time of the Senate Attendance inthe Houho So Small That Nothing Bat Private Business V us Attempted WASHINGTON Jan 6In the senate Mr Hills resslution of yesterday as to the immigration bill was passed The I Quarantine bill was then taken up and discussed till on motion of Mr Sherman the senate went into executive session When tue doors reopened consideration of the quarantine bill was resumed Mr Chandler Republican of New Hampshire spoke about three hours devoting de-voting most of his argument t th bill t suspend immigration which measure he favored Arguments against the quarantine bill were made by Mr McPherson Democrat Demo-crat of New Jersey and Mr Platt Republican Re-publican of Connecticut Mr Mills Democrat of Texas and Mr Dolph Republican Re-publican of Oregon Many amendments were offered some of which were agreed I to others going over until tomorrow when the bill comes up as a special order In the course of his speech Mr Chandler Chan-dler spoke of the inconsistency of admitting admit-ting tendollar immigrants and excluding sellsupporting industrious men under the labor contract law Referring to the North German Lloyd Steamship company com-pany Mr Chandler said it was the favorite favor-ite route of the secretary of the treasury assistant treasurer commissioner of immigration im-migration and other treasury officials when they go abroad and it always had been very kind to them I had always he said given them the very best accommodations accom-modations and i they got short of money while on the other side and Congress had been negligent about providing means for their support while over there it loaned them money JBe invoked the assistance oi the North German Lloyds to carry out the provision not t bring 2200 passengers on one steamship and he invoked in all sincerity the newspaper press of the country to aid him in his great work to benefit humanity human-ity After further argument the bill was modified in some particulars and ordered printed and then the Senate adjourned |
