Show RING DON THE CURTAIN The Last Act In the Petrified Man Comedy THE GANG IS LOCATED Connection of Greenwood Pnckwood and Sills ivitli the Case Sills Says Dn the Petrified Man and Goes Back to Work Fooled the Smart Chaps Though Scared by The Herald Very little remains to be said concerning concern-ing the petrified man who played such a cruel joke on many of our wise and lerned citizens Full of Portland cement and mourned by his journalistic sponsor he has gone safely down into the shadows He is now but the memory of a fake that was THE HERALD promised to show who the perpetrators of the hoax were and it is prepared to carry out its promise It will then ring down the curtain and the comedy will be ended As stated yesterday the body was sent down from Ogden to this city on Dec 23 consigned to 0 D Greenwood It was learned at the local freight office that it was not called for until several days after its arrival here It was dug up Jan 2 It was therefore not taken from the depot until about the time the grave was prepared J D Greenwood is the proprietor of a cigar store at 231 South Main street It was at his place that the owners of the fraud advertised the Inhibition would take place but the show was indefinitely postponed by THE HERALD A very vigorous vig-orous search yesterday failed to reveal the whereabouts of Greenwood A reporter laid in wait for him at his place of business busi-ness the greater part ot the day but he did not put in an appearance He was evidently not hunting for reporters but his connection with the case as one of the perpetrators of the hoax has been pretty clearly shown THE DISCOVERER TALKS Mr Blaine Sills who discovered the wonderful curio has gone back to his plastering trade He was found at work on a house in East Waterloo yesterday When questioned concerning the discovery discov-ery that the body was shipped to this city he said I dont know anything about that I saw thebody dug up and thats alllknow about it You claim to have sold the lot to a man just before this body was discovered discov-ered Yes I bargained to sell it to a man named Packwood 1 How did you happen to do the digging dig-ging there Well Packwood wanted a vault dug there and we agreed to do the work Soon So-on Saturday last one of the men working here with me now was sent over to the 1 place to do the digging I simply told him to dig in the corner of the lot and he did so After he had made the excavation what induced you to go there and resume digging on Monday Because it wasnt deep enough to suit Packwood Now Mr Sills dont you know that Packwood or some one else placed the body in the ground and let you dig it up No sir and I dont believe it because I the ground had not been disturbed when our man commenced work But you dont know what could have prevented the body being dumped in there between Saturday and Monday No I didnt think of that replied Sills in a perplexed way FOOLED THE SMART CHAPS Oh damn the petrified man anyhow I dont know anything more about it than I have stated The thing was dug up and if it isnt a petrified man its something else thats all I am no expert ex-pert on petrified men and after I found It I waited for these smart chaps to tell me what it was Physicians and others came down to my place in droves They saw the body and told me it was petrified But I havenH made anything out of it It cost me 3 to get the damned thing to my I house and nobody else has lost a cent on account of it Well you sold the lot didnt you asked the reporter Packwood bargained to buy it but when this thing was found he said he didnt want to buy a private grave yard and backed out Who is Packwood anyhow lie is a manlmetatGreenwoodsplace a ft w weeks ago The reporter smelled a mouse as soon ash as-h heard the name Greenwood and asked w L 1 re that individual could be found Oh he keeps a cigar store and billiard ro nn on Main street next to Lannans market Well Greenwood is the very man to whom this body was consigned What THE HERALD stated that this morning And what has become of Packwood Oh hes at Greenwoods Has he an interest in this body Well yes he has How did that happen After I found the thing and came uptown up-town Packwood was one of the first men I met I Where did you meet him Oh on the corner And when I told him he said he didnt want to buy a graveyard and called the bargain for the lot off but after seeing the body he bought an interest in that Sort of transferred his interest from the lot to the petrified man I Yes He paid you something for the interest inter-est WellTie agreed to and said he would telegraph for the money SCARED BY THE HERALD Why aidnt you go ahead with the exhibition ex-hibition as you advertised You see I didnt know what the thing was and when THE HERALD came out and said that if we exhibited it as a petrified man we would be arrested for obtaining money under false pretenses I quit Packwood is going to exhibit it here though As for me Ive had enough of petrified men Why last night the boys would point at me and say there goes that petrified feller and this morning I concluded that I didnt want to be a showman and went back to work at my trade PACKWOOD FOUND The reporter then returned to town and went at once to Greenwoods place on I Main street In answer to the inquiry if i there was a man named Packwood there a I tall well dressed man with the appearance appear-ance of a westerner promptly replied Thats me The reporter then introduced himself and asked Mr Packwood how long he had been hereAbout here-About two months was the reply I came from the state of Washington where I was a deputy sheriff You can ensily get my record there if you want it Do they make petrified bodies up in Washington No said Mr Packwood with a smile I have heard of some being dug up in California though Is that where the one that was dug up here came from I dont know anything about it I Do you mean to say that you didnt ship it in here I do I met Sills right here at Greenwoods Green-woods three weeks ago and agreed to buy this lot It was simply a speculation and after the body was found there I decided not to take the lot Now Mr Packwood it has been proven that this body was received at the freight depot in Ogden early in December and several people saw it there On Dec I 23 it was shipped to this city and consigned con-signed to Mr Greenwood Meantime you had bought the lot where the body was to be found Now what do these facts Indicate SUSPICIOUS AINT IT Mr Packwood passed his hand over his forehead gnawed his long moustache a moment and finally turning to the reporter re-porter said Damned suspicious aint it Doesnt it look as though you were responsible for this whole thing Yes by jimminy it does Do you admit it then Oh no You reporters put these things together just like the lawyers Butyoure off your base This was said in a halfhearted sort of away a-way though as though the man was perfectly I per-fectly conscious of the fact that the reporter re-porter knew he was a colossal fabricator I Now that the whole thing has been exposed resumed the reporter what are you going to do with your man Exhibit him Not as a petrified man though just as a stone man I dont know anything about how he was made bat hes stone If he isntpetrified hes a mighty fine piece of work and deceived these doctors and men who ought to know We have secured the new building immediately im-mediately south of the Hooper El dredge block and you bet your life the I stone man will be on exhibition there Monday The reporter doubted this latter statement state-ment but it was confirmed by a call at the place and Mr Packwood evidently intends to carry out his program Thus ends the most barefaced fraud that was ever foisted upon the Salt Lake public Where They Make Em FRESNO Cal Jan 6Special to the HERALDThe petrified man dug up in Salt Lake may have been made here R M Osborne shipped a petrified body in the direction of Utah in September The consignee cannot be ascertained At least three bodies have been shipped from II Fresno the past year or two all believed to have been manufactured |
