every-thing is quite and people resting on their oars It bodes well for the continued progress pro-gress and usefulness of the societies Masonic Tuesday evening the regular meeting j of Argenta lodge was held The attend j I j anco was very good and after the recular i i business was transacted a very pleasant episode followed which was thepresenta tion to the retiring worshipful master R L Scaunelof an elegant past masters jewel by the lodge Brother Scannel was also presented with silver embroidered niasmiic aprog as a token of the esteem in which ne as held by his brothern in the lodge An elegant supper was partaken of when the lodgeclosed after enjoying one of the pleasantest meetings I Utah Chapter met in regular session on Wednesday evoning and on Thursday the Coinmanderv held its statedconclavo arid worked in the Knight Templar degree On Friday evening the ladies of the East Eas-t < n Star met and had a very pleasant and profitable time The masonic board of relief is a There was no degree work but several applications for membership mem-bership were received and will be dealt i with an due course Oquirrh encampment encamp-ment met on Tuesday and transacted the regular routine business Canton Colfax i also met on Tuesday evening C 0 i Farnsworth was elected commandant vice T W Whitely resigned The other business I busi-ness was of a routine character S Enterprise lodge No 15 met on Wednesday Wed-nesday evening and installed officers as follows George A Hawkes noble grand H G Giliett vicegrand C A Wixson permanent secretary William Elliott recording re-cording secretary and Henry Walters treasurer The officers were installed by Grand Master H F Evans assisted by the following officers of the Grand lodge William Elliott grand marshal L L Baumjjarten grand guardian J M Priest acting grand tecretary and W P Rowe grand treasurer In addition to the installations the initiatory ini-tiatory degree was conferred on one candidate can-didate Ridgley lodge No9 also met on Wednesday Wed-nesday but the work was of a routine character Utah lodge No 1 met on Thursday evening Several visitinc brothers were present and interesting speeches were made and a fraternal time enjoyed On Friday evening the joint installation of officers of Salt Lake and Fidelity lodges I took place The officers of the grand lodge were present and conducted the I ceremonies very impressively The names of the new officers have already been published I pub-lished THE HERALD In addition to the installations the second degree was conferred on two candidates in Fidelity I lodge The attendance was very large and a very great deal of enthusiasm was manifested Ridgely lodge will install I their new officers next Wednesday and Utah and Jordan lodges will hold a joint installation on Monday evening I The grand lodge officers have been busy with installations at other points in the I jurisdiction as well as in Salt Lake On Thursday they went to Sandy to officiate at the lodge in that town On Monday evening the lodge at Corinne installed the following officers District Deputy Grand Master House officiating Junior past grand H M Jarvis noble grand Harvey Allen vice grand G L Gilbert secretary W F House treasurer P Havlin trustees Jarvis and Church Knights of Pythias Calanthe lodge met on Monday evening There was no degree work but a very pleasant and interesting session was had The installation of officers will take place next Monday evening At the meeting of Myrtle lodge on Tuesday evening the officers for the ensuing term were installed in-stalled after which the new officials entertained en-tertained the lodge at a banquet at the Arcade restaurant where toast and sentiment sen-timent were given and a right merry time spent Monitor lodge the new lodge met on Wednesday evening There was a large attendance and everything went along in fine style This lodge bids fair to become one of the most powerful in the jurisdiction Rocky Mountain held its regular meeting meet-ing on Thursday evening The principal business was the installation of officers whose names have already appeared in THE HERALD The grand officers conducted the installation After be lodge adjourned all were invited toke to-ke supper at the Saddle Rock restaurant restau-rant under the direction of brother I Berets A very pleasing and spontaneous tribute I trib-ute was offered to Brother John P Mea kin by the members of Rocky Mountain looW in regular session assembled j Brother Meakin has been an earnest and faithful worker for years in the cause of Ii Pythianism He has freely given much of his time and his talents as a publicS i public-S speaker and elocutionist have at all times been at the service of the order I i His pen too has been and still is ably j wielded for the advancement of the cause I and now that he is suffering severe domestic I i c = do-mestic affliction It is most gratifying to find that the brethern remember his services j ser-vices in a substantial manner The men S of Rock Mountain lodge are generous I and large hearted and on this occasion p their generosity flowed spontaneously I and freely and their motto of friendship charity and benevolence was carried out i in a practical way which reflects great i credit on them and cheers and aids their very worthy but afflicted brother Deeds like this are what Mizpah lodge met on Monday evening in the Temple of Honor hall The business busi-ness was of a routine character The question < of giving a grand masked ball was discussed and favorably entertained Eminent Past Commander Loder will install in-stall the officers for the coming term on Monday evening next when a full attendance at-tendance 1 is specially requested Sons or St George The Sons of St George gave their first social i for 1893 on last Wednesday night at the Temple of Honor hall to one of the best and most cultured audiences it has ever been their privilege to entertain Besides Be-sides i being the greatest success both in the 1 entertainment and the crowded house that i met there to enjoy the feast of reason and flow of soul provided for their benefit bene-fit it was another evidence of the full appreciation i that a Salt Lake public has when they have such an entertainment given them free of charge Some ot the best musicians and singers favored the social with pow-erful voice Solo by the guitar and mandolin club i Closing remarks by Past President W G Clarke earnestly requesting all Englishmen English-men to work towards cementing themselves them-selves together for the benefit of their own countrymen and protecting their own interests to the best of their ability W P W Gill Mills moved a vote of thanks to the singers and musicians also to all those who had E > O kindly given their aid for the success of the social and inviting in-viting everyone to call again at the next entertainment and they would meet the same cordial welcome with as good a pro gramme if not better than that they had just enjoyed The lodge closed one of the most successful of socials by the entire audieace joining in singing the closing ode to the tune of Auld Lang Syne The Temple or Honor I The Salt Lake Temple of Honor and Temperance No I of this city gave their second musical and literary entertainment in their hall over Deseret bank huilding on Thursday evening to a large and appreciative ap-preciative audience of the Templars and their numerous friends The programme rendered was inaugurated by a few words of welcome by the presiding officer Mr G H Knowlden after which an organ solo was effectively rendered by Miss Mary Clark followed with a select reading read-ing by the veteran Templar W T Harris entitled The Lawyers plea which was remarkably well read by one so aged Then a flute solo by Mr Robinson its Years Since Last We Met received general gen-eral applause Mrs Robinson wife of the former with Professor VonBon at tho organ gave the charming selection Evangellne followed as an encore with omin Through the Rye sang in her clear forcible manner next a recitation reci-tation by Master Archie Knowlden styled Important For Drinkers to Know was very clearly and effectively effec-tively given for one so young and brought down the house NextA fine temperance speech by the veteran and well known temperance advocate ad-vocate Mr Scott Anderson who kept the audience spellbound by his forcible weird word pictures of the drunkards home and habits in truly John Gough style Then followed a beautiful duet on violin and organ by the coming young musicians music-ians of Salt Lake Master Schuttle and Miss Mary Clarkwhich fairly charmed all present so that an encore was demanded de-manded which was willingly given by these young performers in excellent style Then the favorite songstress Miss Maud Pratt delighted all with her beautiful beau-tiful rendering of the worldrenowned Scotch ballard Annie Laurie with Frank Merril at the organ Of course an encore was loudly demanded and a beautiful beau-tiful selection given accompanied by herself her-self on the organ After a few remarks on the good of the order by P W C T H D Folsom and a cornet sofo Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still followed as an encore by Then Youll Remember Me7by the famous bandmaster and musician Mr John Held and Good Night to All and A Happy S 4 ew Years Greeting wound up j j < < j rr 7 I one of the most pleasing and instructive entertainments of the season As the I Templars intend to keep up these social gatherings monthly during the winter I season and they do not charge for admission ad-mission the public should avail themselves i them-selves of these musical treats for such they are proving to be and be on hand at their next gathering which takes place on the first Thursday in February The Templars and their friends desire to return re-turn thanks to all those who so kindly volunteered to make the entertainment a success and say Come and see us the membership and the court Brother James Moffat also made some remarks of the same nature and closed by a few witticisms which were well received He was followed by SubChief J F Mills and the balance of the officers were installed the remarks of all being to push forestry not only in Salt Lake but in Utah and finally have a grand court here in Salt Lake Retiring Chief Ranger Eeynon made a little speech which was cordially received All in all the evening was the most enthusiastic the Foresters have indulged in for some time and after adjournment for the evenine Chief Ranger Robertson and Secretary Moffat invited the bretheren of the court to patronize a leading hostelry and refresh the inner man which was duly done and a pleasant hour was spent in social chat and demolishing de-molishing the refreshments Forestry is in Utah to stay and grow and ere many years they will lead the older courts here in the race for public favor The Feresters of Salt Lake are determined to
