Show ALLEVS LITTLE SCHEME I He Wants the Republican Gerrymander Gerry-mander to he Perpetuated Allen has a little scheme and perhaps per-haps hopes to lead the Democratic members into a trap before he gets through Yesterday he introduced a bill in the House a duplicate of which was introduced in the Council in which it is provided that the Utah commission should be abolished and all the electorlal work be done by the county officials This appears innocent enough on the face of i but it appears ap-pears that several of the Democrats see a very large sized colored gentleman gentle-man in that woodpile and they are accusing Allen of a design to keep the legislature Republican I is well known that the Utah commission com-mission while it was Republican made an infamous gerrymander in the legislative legisla-tive districting of the territory in order to help the Liberal party into power This tinkering gave the Liberals several more seats than they were entitled to and when the division came gave those districts to the Republicans on acount of their superiority superi-ority in numbers in the ranks of the Liberal party Thus the present legislature legis-lature became Republican legs Several of the Democratic SCrer Democrtc members say that Allen wishes to see the commission com-mission abolished in order to leave the territory with a redIstricting body composed of a Republican legislature made Republican by a shameless Republca gerry mander I statehood could be secured with the Republican legislature in charge of the districting it would mean the almost certain election of two Republican Senators from Utah That is the evident purpose of the bill ant Allen would like to rush it through before l the Democrats realize what it means and then have the Democratic Congress approve it under a misapprehension misappre-hension But Allens hopes are likely to be dashed This is indeed a trick that Is vain for the members of the minority realize too well that in order to get their rights there must be teir a redistrict leg of the territory which will give them enough of the seats now held by Repbllcans to enable them t elect two Democratic Senators Therefore this tricky measure will be opposed in the committees in the Council in the House by the Governor and the Democratic Demo-cratic Congress Allen must try something some-thing less transparent Even though the Democrt are opposed to the existence ex-istence of the commission and have long fought against I yet they realize real-ize that in this respect it ha work to do and want It to last until the work is well done |
