Show GRANT TO LOGAN LOGAX I An Interesting Discovery Among the Papers of the War Department One of the last letters written by the great commander General Grant was discovered recently In the archives of the war department during a search with a view to collating data in reference ref-erence to the Nashville ca Nahvie campaign of 1864 This letter had no reference to the papers among which i was found having been written a score of years after the event with which it could have any connection Its recipient General Logan was conducting a campaign cam-paign for reelection to the United States Senate and some comment had been created regarding his actions prior to the battle fought at Nashville Tenn General Grant at this time was confined to his residence in New I York from the effects efect of a fall upon fal the sidewalk while getting out of a cab With a view to strengthening himself with the people in whose hands his election lines were cast General Logan addressed a communication to his former commanderinchief and re ceived the following reply New York Feb 14 1S84 1 The Hon John A Logan United States Senate Washington D C Dear SirIn reply to your letter of the llth I have to say that my response must be from memory entirely hav ing no data at hand to refer to In re gard to the order from you to go to Louisville and Nashville for the purpose pur-pose of relieving General Thomas I never thought of the question who should comand the combined armies of the Cumberland and the Ohio I was simply dissatisfied with the slowness of General Thomass moving and sent you out with orders to relieve him No doubt if the order bad been carried out the question would imme diately have arisen a to who was en titled to the combined tted command pro 110 vided General Schofield was senior in rank to you which I do not know that he was I know that his confirmation confrmaton as a majorgeneral took place long af ter yours but I do not know the date of his commission The question in that case of the command of the whole would have been settled in a very few hours by the use of the telegraph be tween Nashville and Washington I was in Washington when you arrived in Louisville and tf > lpmar > Ji < iq |
