Show WENT DOWN IN A GALE A Schooner Founders and AH Aboard Lost New York Jan 17The Dutch steamer Amsterdam from Rotterdam arrived this morning and reports a succession of gales and tremendous seas On Sunday last fluring the storm of northwestvgales she sighted what was supposed to bethe American Amercan fishing schooner Maggie E Wells of Gloucester Mass in a sinking condition and with the boats stove In response to signals for assistance Chief Officer J Meyers Second Boatswain Boat-swain Erequhart Carpenter A J Oudyn Steerage Steward A Boso Quartermaster F G Eichhorn Seaman Sea-man A V vleet and Seaman A Vanderweilt volunteered to man a boat to rescue the crew of the sinking vessel ves-sel numbering fourteen j When the boat neared the unfortunate I unfortu-nate vessel it capsized in a squall and all perished except Vanderweilt Another An-other crew volunteered but the captain decided it was too hazardous and de ciaeo t wait tin tne gale had subsided The steamer kept in the neighborhood I but in the heavy squall and squal snowstorm snow-storm lost sight of the schooner and was thereafter unable to find any trace of her I is believed she foundered with all on board The schooner Maggie E Wells left Gloucester Mass on December 23 for Grand Banks after a trip for fresh halibut No news has been received of her since The crew consisted of Captain Dav idson and thirteen men |
