Show Vtcre Democracy Is Appreciated Editor erld SirIn Tuesdays issue of the Trib uric there i an article with the above title but like many of its articles it abounds with errors and misrepresentations misrepresenta-tions tonsI vainly attempts to show that the Democrats are not an American party because they object t excessive taxation taxa-tion It u high protective tariff and legislation in the interests of rhonopo lies and combinations constitute American Ameri-can patriotism then we a Democrats ii can liy no claim t be of that Ameri t h ° C 1 4 r can party But we are nevertheless I a great American party and the party I i in power Of course this hurts the I sensltve nature of the Tribune The I Tribune says that according to English Eng-lish estimation Mr Cleveland is the I incarnation of all that is great honest i and good Did England ever have such thoughts of Abraham Lincoln I My answer a an Englishman and connected with hundreds of thousands I of English workingmen is yes They admired him for upholding the union and emancipating the slaves and they shed tears of sorrow when he was assassinated as-sassinated The English people also respected and gave a hearty welcome t President Presi-dent Grant when he visited their own shores And I recolect well the time when Mr Cowan M P for Newcastle on Tyne and other workingmen showed show-ed him through the Armstrong Gun factory President Garfield another Republican president was also well liked and respected by the English working classes casses The Englishman knows who t respect re-spect and admire in spite of their pblitcal proclivites and that might be a lesson to the Tribune This great Republican critic the Tribune says How is it that the party which isthe party of the people of the United States Is conducted by men who have for their chief eulogists the papers beyond be-yond the seas My answer Is as one who knows something of things beyond the sea that the Englishman is no lover of excessive taxation He does not believe be-lieve in taxing the many for the benefit bene-fit of the few He has that much love and respect for Brother Jonathan being I may say of the same blood that he would like to see him prosperous and have untrammeled commerce with the world word I Is only the aristocratic tories of England that are protectionists The masses wil have none of it The Republican Re-publican Tories here may prate about encouraging Industries and high wages and so forth but the working classes are begining to see into those fallacies A Abraham Lincoln once said you may fool the people for a time but you cannot fool them all the time Again the Tribune says There is another queer feature about this Democratic party I draws to i a great many of the English and Irish who emigrate to this country They come because they cannot stand English Eng-lish methods but the moment they get here their effort seems to be to do anything possible to build up the party that wants to open this country t English rapacity Now I maintain that is a false position posi-tion The Englishman comes here deeply Imbued with ideas of liberty He Js thoroughly opposed to class legislation legis-lation he has seen enough of i in his native land The reflective and intelligent Briton has not forgotten what brought about the chartist and bread riots about a century ago Generally speaking he is too shrewd t be led away by Republican faker Ism and therefore he is drawn into the fold of Democracy and becomes a patriotic American one of the people 1 He cannot see hxjw taxation can make the toiler nch or protected industries in-dustries cheapen the commodities of life I Is against the doctrine of common I com-mon sense and the generality of Eng lishmen have a little of it Again our Republican organ is at sea lost In the fog of its own vaporing when it says Imagine a man leaving I the old world through oppression his i heart filled with bitterness He comes to this country and joins the party of I oppression here No sir such a fool a that cannot I b found outside of the Republican i party I is evident that the editor of the Tribune refers to my letter I written some time ag and published in his paper entitled The Old World and the New and Why I Left My refugee Native Land signed by a political Let him read the reply which I sent to one of his Republican critics and because of its Democratic nature hew he-w ld publish it He will then find out the reason why every honest and intelligent emigrant from the old world connects himself with the Democratic party here Your Respectfully A DEMOCRATIC WORKINGMAN |
