Show OF INTEREST TO THE SOLDIERS Rules for the Use of the New Revolver Re-volver Soldiers of the regular army are now being equipped with the new Colt 38 calibre revolver which replaces the heavy weapon that has been so long in use The new revolver is away ahead of the old arm in all respects In unloading the old Colt weapon one shell at a time could only be extracted and then only with much difficulty In the new revolver the entire cylinder throws over to the left clear of the breach and by an automatic contrivance contriv-ance unloads itself Yesterday the following rules for the use of the gun were published by General Gen-eral McCook for information and guidance guid-ance throughout the department and troop commanders are required to see that their men are made familiar with every requirement FirstBefore firing or snapping the revolver be sure the cylinder is fully closed and the latch is in place SecondNever attempt to open the cylinder when the revolver is cocked A failure to comply strictly with the foregoing rules will certainly result in serious damage to the weapon ThirdThe revolver should be kept clean free from rust and well oiled FourthThe tension screw should never be screwed in tightly unless the mainspring has become so weak that the blow of the hammer fails to explode the prim r If screwed in when the spring is not weakened the result will be to so increase the force of the blow of the hammer as to cause piercing of the cartridge primer FifthThe limbwork of lock must not be tampered with The side plate should never be removed except under the supervision of a noncommissioned Officer Sixth Never remove side plate by prying it out of place Hold the pistol with the wood part of the stock removed re-moved in the left hand side plate slightly inclined down Strike smart blows with a piece of wood on the part of the frame usually covered by the wood of the stock until the plate is jarred out of place In order to avoid the issuance of orders from both the departments and army headquarters in the same case and to prevent cqnfusion arising from retention of mens names on the rolls of two or more posts as at present possible the following army order is issued from Washington by order of George D Ruggles adjutantgeneral Hereafter when members of the hospital hos-pital corps are transferred from one station to another by order of the department de-partment commander they will be dropped from and taken up on the rolls and returns of the posts concerned unless it is specially stated in the order making the transfer that the man will be returned to his proper station as soon as his services can be dispensed with No order will be issued in these cases from headquarters of the army |
