Show Idaho Diamond Fields The diamond find in Idaho though derided de-rided a good deal by the press saems to be much more than the fake it has been called so repeatedly The latest news is to the effect that it is a fact The stones found are pronounced genuine diamonds as good as those obtained in the diamond fields of South Africa j j 1 The late discovery has been viewed with some suspicion and no little incredulity j in-credulity because of former reports of a similar discovery which soon died away i I and were looked upon as attempts to I boom the country From what is now j i 1 1 stated it appears probable that the original reports may have been correct Iud < I-ud the reason given for not following upI i I the find may have been true The story told in Idaho papers is to this effect Several years ago Governor LYON while traveling to the east got into conversation con-versation with two miners who had been working a placer fifteen miles southeast of Snake river which did not pan out very well They had some crystals which they had picked up near that spot Governor Gov-ernor LYON took three of them and in I New York an expert pronounced them diamonds They were sold for D30 He informed the men of the result and an appointment ap-pointment was made to meet them at Boise in the spring The miners went to San Francisco and on their way to Portland Port-land were drowned at sea I Subsequently LYON and a few prospectors i prospect-ors went to the place described The I ground was soon all staked off for claims i and diligent search was made but no precious stones rewarded their labors i I The project was therefore abandoned and the promotors of the search endured a I great deal derision mingled with abuse I The new discovery seems to confirm the 1 truth of the old report If these sexist s-exist at the place indicated to any great I extent or anything like what has been reported I ported Idaho will soon have something j much more exciting than politics to en I gageher attention While silver is subject I sub-ject to so much depression the mining prospects of Idaho may become vastly I I more brilliant from the light that comes from her diamond fields Without endorsing en-dorsing anything that is alleged concerning concern-ing this discovery THE HERALD hopes for Idahos sake that all that has been reported I re-ported is true f |
