Show NEZ PERCE IKDIAHS The Commission Unable to Complete Terms for Their Lands LEWISTON Ida Dec 22The United States commissioners having charge of the negotiations of a treaty with the Nez Ptrce Indians for the purchase by the government of unallotted and reservation lands returned this morning from the council which they have been attending Although they raised their offer from 5 to 3 an acre the council refused to accept it and gave out that they would not part with their lands at any price The commissioners commis-sioners think the parties whO are desirous de-sirous of leasing these lands from the Indians In-dians have been at work but they have not yet given up the hope of effecting a settlement They have called another council for the 29th and will then endeavor en-deavor to get the poorer Indians to consent con-sent to the sale The council as at present constituted is composed entirely of wealthy members of the tribe who have big herds af cattle and horses themselves and wish t retain pasture pas-ture lands as long a they possibly can and to lease that which they do not require re-quire themselves to white men for gazing gaz-ing purposes only |
