Show EEMAEKABLE OPERATION Performed by a New York Surgeon on a Patent Suffering from Appendicitis NEW YORK Dec 22The medical profession i much stirred up so far as it isyet familiar with the details of the case by the story of a remarkable surgical operation performed within a few days by Dr Albert Shank of this city James McCaughey aged 1 suffering from appendicitis ap-pendicitis or as this is vulgarly called inflammation of the blind gut The trouble was caused by some foreign substance sub-stance entering the vermiform appendix The doctor when called found the patient in a bad way and recommended an operation opera-tion the diagnosis showing that an ab cess was forming around the vermiform appendix The parents delayed operation opera-tion until the arrival of relatives who had been summoned and when finally ready for the operation the doctor discovered discov-ered that the abcess had broken and the pus was flooding the abdominal cavity In this crisis it seemed clear that the boy was dying The doctor told the relatives rel-atives that it was barely possible an operation oper-ation might save him but the chances were many times against it They insisted in-sisted however on his proceeding The patient was anaesthetized and as soon as the opening was made in the abdomen there was a plenteous flow of pus At almost the same moment the pulse ceased to beat the heart stopped and every evidence evi-dence of most complete collapse betokened betok-ened the presence of death The doctor iustantly enlarged the incision in-cision and holding it open with one hand poured with the other the contents of a pitcher of hot water into the abdominal abdom-inal cavity In a few m nuts there was a renewal of heart action and aided by hypodermic injections the boy slowly returned re-turned to life The foreign substance was quickly located and removed The operation oper-ation was completed and the boy is now on the road to recovery |
