| Show THE UtfLY UUUKLi1ti Mrs Leslie Carters First Appearance on the Stage Nym Crinkles Criticism Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dlspatcal NEW YORK Nov 11Mrs Leslie Carter of Chicago divorce fame made her first appearance ap-pearance on the Broadway theatre stage last night The play was The Ugly Duckling Duck-ling and here is what Nym Crinkle says of it and the leading lady The scheme of the play undertook to picture the heroic efforts of one sister to save another from the vengeance of a Corsican both sisters having wedded the same man It told this with superfluous comedy scenes and personages and accomplished the tell log by an impossible third act in which the hero overcomes the yillian of the play by means of a narcotic on her man Mrs Carter played the part of Kate Graydon who by an allowable poetic license is re ferred to as the Ugly Duckling She is a volatile harum scarum effusive girl just b + c man she loves carried off Dy her sister only to have to repel his attentions afterward when be is tired of her sister Mrs Carter made a very favorable impression im-pression in spite of the fact that she was in a nervous condition that amounted almost to hysteria She Is something of the type of woman of Agnes Bethel almost a clairvoyant clair-voyant in her temperiment with a mobile face capable of every shade of expression from the keenest joy to the most intense suffering but marred somewhat by a largemouth large-mouth of which she makes the most extraordinary extra-ordinary use Her voice is low and sympathetic sym-pathetic but of slightly worn timbre and she uses continually a set laugh that is thrown off in thirds and ends with high G Her audience pronounced favorably upon her but it did not care for the play She was called for twice at the end of her best scenes but had the good taste not to re spond while the play was in action |
