| Show General Greeleys Report WASHINGTON Nov HTho annual report re-port of the chief of the signal office General Gen-eral Grecloy says there has been a decided de-cided improvement in the condition and efficiency of the army as regards signal practice The most Important event in connection with the work of the signal corps has been the unpreccdently suc cessful establishment and maintainance of an elaborate system of heiiegraph signaling I in the department of Arizona longer dis tances being attained than ever before Referring to the weather bureau of the service General Greeley says the duties devolving personally on the dutes fleer permit less than onequarter of a minute on an average in which to decide formulate and express a forecast for the state or district regarding any meteorological element such as the weather temperature and wind Rarely can a minute be given to predictions for any particular state or district Notwithstanding Notwith-standing all the difficulties there were only fourteen occasions last year on which sovere cold waves were not predicted 93 per cent of all the important cold waves being predicted Speaking of tornadoes General Greeley says it appears from data on hand that in no state may a destructive tornado bo ex dected oftener than two years and that tho area over which total destruction can bo expected is exceedingly small even in the states most liable to these violent storms General Grceloy believes this matter ol great public importance and de sires to impress upon the people at large how small are the chances of personal in jury j or loss of property in this connection In conclusion fie says tornadoes are not so destructive of lifo as thunder storms |
