| Show AN INSULTING PROPOSTION The New York Tribune is kind enough to nominate Mn CHAKLES DANA editor of the New York Sun for United States Senator from the excelsiorjstate to succeed EVARTS We presume that journalistic courtesy prompted this action then there may have been an element of selfishness in it A Democrat will be chosen as a matter of couse and Mu DANA would be most pleasing to the Tribune for he comes nearer than any other professing Democrat Demo-crat to being a Republican But it is hardly worth while to seriously consider the Tribunes suggestion no matter mat-ter in what sense it was intended to betaken be-taken Mis DANA may be a Democrat but he is not in harmony with his party and has not been in sympathy with it for many years At the last two elections he did his utmost to defeat the regular nominee and throw all his influence on the side of I the enemy MK CLEVELAND was one of the cleanest and best Presidents the country ever had and his admistration was a model of purity and ability but nothing < that he did was pleasing to I the editor of the Sun who was careful to exclude from the columns of his paper every favorable reference to the President The defeat of Mr CLEVELAND for reelection two years ago was signalized in the SUit by such brutal and vulgar gloating gloat-ing as would have disgraced a characterless opposition sheet The exPresident retired to private life where he has been as modest 1 as the humblest citizen attending strictly to his own affairs and as strictly avoiding interference in the concerns of others but DANA will not permit him to enjoy life in i peace but pursues him with a malice and hate one seldom encounters in this world It is ridiculous to talk about Democrats sending DANA to the Senate forD mocrnts f regard him with contempt His ability is not discounted and the fact that his paper is one of the greatest journas in America is not lost sight of but the vindictiveness which he has manifested the hate which actuate him and the mischief which he has wrought make ii impossible for Democrats to cither honor or trust CHARLES A DAB 1 Wo hope that Governor HILL will signify n willingness to accept the Senatorship in I which event ho will be elected without opposition op-position Democrats who desire the best for the party want to see HILL well off the Presidential track before 1S93 when the road will be clear for the nomination and election of the one man who must be put up for the racaGiiovEK CLEVELAND |
