BLODGETT :; LAYTON - It may be neces-' neces-' sary to take a second iook, but i it's a fact -- the Internal Revenue Service is offering free tax assistance. "I know it's hard to believe," laughed one fulltime IRS employee, "But there are :; several of us who are doing ' this work free to the public -j and at the public's " convenience." i THEN HE added: "And you i- can't imagine what red tape "- we had to go through to offer :I; this service. It was wrose than being audited by the IRS." f The service is countywide ' withclinicsbeingconductedat g six sites as follows: SOUTH Davis Branch of the :: Davis County Library, 725 South Main, Bountiful, Wednesdays Wed-nesdays from 6-8 p.m. ; Davis County Main Library, 38 S. 100 East, Farmington, Mondays from 6-8p.m. Layton High School, 440 East Wasatch Drive, Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m.; Vae View Elementary School, 1750 West 1600 North, Layton, Thursdays from 6-9p.m. NORTH Davis Branch of the Davis County Library, 562 South 1000 East, Clearfield, 68 p.m.; and Sunset City office, 85 West 1800 North, Sunset Tuesdays from 4-7p.m. "IRS personnel have been wanting to do this for a long time but at first there appeared ap-peared to be some problems, but apparently any conflicts there might have been have been worked out and IRS employees finally were permitted per-mitted to do this service. "BUT SINCE the service must be volunteer, there can be no compensation whatsoever what-soever to the employees. They must do it on their own time," the spokesman explained. Virginia Beam, left, is one of several employees of the Internal Revenue Service offering free assistance to the average taxpayer who may be struggling to do his own return. Getting help is Anna Nagy. The program is aimed primarily at helping low-income, elderly and non-English speaking taxpayers, it was explained. But anyone with a problem or a simple tax return may attend the clinic for assistance. as-sistance. "WE DON'T intend to do everyone's tax job for them, but we are available to give assistance. Strange as it may seem, we want to aid -- not harrass - the taxpayer and this is the best way we know of to help," he said. Taxpayers are urged to bring their tax forms, 1977 W-2 forms, and all necessary information in-formation to complete their tax forms. Last year's return can also be of benefit as a reference. IN THIS program, at least, the good guys wearng the white hats are from the Internal Inter-nal Revenue Service. |
